Job Overview
We are seeking an exceptional Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our team at the North London Hospice and play a vital role in shaping the future of our services.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a team transforming its services to ensure we provide responsive care designed to meet the needs of our communities. You will be instrumental in the ongoing integration of our inpatient and community services.
In this role, you will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to provide specialist medical care for patients in our inpatient unit and in the community. Additionally, you will participate in the regional on-call service, offering your expertise to patients and families across the region.
To be considered for this role, you must be a fully registered member of the General Medical Council with a current license to practice. You should be on the Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine or within six months of obtaining your Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of the interview.

Main Duties of the Job
This post is aimed at providing clinical support and leadership for inpatients and those supported by Community services in Enfield and Haringey (East Team) at North London Hospice.
The hospice is currently undertaking transformation work in the clinical services to design services supporting unplanned and rapid response work and develop virtual ward community beds. The post holder will be involved in the development and embedding of these developments and ongoing service review.
The post holder will primarily work on the inpatient unit at North London Hospice (NLH) but will provide two sessions of community team cover. The post holder will take part in the regional on-call service. Please see the job plan for further information.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
- Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service of the highest standard
- Work with the multi-disciplinary team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines to maintain good working practices
- Provide effective clinical leadership for all staff in the hospice and hospital through positive collaboration with colleagues
- Offer support and leadership and educational/clinical supervision to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team
- Provide shared clinical responsibility for all patients under the care of the hospice together with the other consultants
- Provide clinical responsibility for inpatients admitted to the In Patient Unit (IPU) at North London Hospice, working alongside the multiprofessional team
- Ensure patient care is evidence-based and/or best common practice
- Ensure clinical practice complements and facilitates the provision of multi-disciplinary care, recognising the physical, psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient and family
- Ensure that all prescribing is in accordance with hospice and Trust policies and statutory requirements
- Ensure accurate and timely clinical information and records are maintained on all patients
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
- MBBS (or equivalent), MRCP, MRCGP, FRCA (or equivalent)
- General expertise in the area of special interest, communication skills training
- Fully registered with GMC, holding a licence to practice
- On Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine or eligible (within 6 months of the interview) for admission to the Specialist Register/CCT/CESR/European Community Rights
- Second degree or higher degree qualification, e.g., MD, PhD or equivalent
Experience
- Training in all aspects of Palliative Medicine
- Ready for full Consultant responsibility
- Consultant experience in Palliative Medicine
Skills and Knowledge
- Ability to provide leadership at multidisciplinary team level
- Ability to organise and prioritise own work effectively
- Good written and verbal communication skills with staff at all levels
- Evidence of involvement in teaching
- Experience supervising medical staff in training
- IT skills – Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Management training
- Participated in wider palliative care education programmes
- Formal Teaching qualification, completed training for educational supervision
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
- Familiarity with the current structure and developments within the NHS and palliative medicine
