Developmental Post - Band 7 progressing to Band 8a
Are you an experienced Band 7 MSK Physiotherapist ready to take the next step into advanced clinical practice and leadership? CLCH is offering an exciting 6-month developmental opportunity, starting at Band 7 with a structured and supported pathway towards progression to Band 8a. During the development period, you will be supported to build and demonstrate the advanced clinical, leadership, education and service development competencies required for the Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner role. Progression to Band 8a is subject to successful completion of the development programme and achievement of agreed competencies.
Working within our integrated community MSK service, you will develop your advanced practice while delivering high-quality patient care and contributing to clinical leadership and service improvement. You will work alongside experienced Advanced Practitioners and a Consultant Physiotherapist, developing your expertise in complex MSK presentations, advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making. You will also develop across the four pillars of advanced practice, with opportunities to contribute to leadership, education, research and service development. Main duties of the job
This post will focus on the delivery and development of MSK services, providing high-level clinical expertise, mentorship, and service innovation. As part of this developmental role, you will:
- Deliver a high standard of advanced clinical care for adult patients with complex musculoskeletal conditions
- Provide expert clinical opinion and advice to managers, supporting the strategic development of the physiotherapy service across the organisation
- Take a lead role in the organisation, development, and evaluation of the Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner service
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure safe, effective, and appropriate management of patients seen within Physiotherapy Practitioner clinics
- Provide clinical leadership within the MSK physiotherapy service, supporting quality improvement, service redesign, and innovation
- Contribute to mentorship, supervision, and development of physiotherapy staff within the service
- Apply the principles of clinical governance to support safe practice, service quality, and continuous improvement
Applicants should have significant experience within an NHS outpatient musculoskeletal setting and experience working at Band 7 level or equivalent. You should be able to demonstrate strong MSK clinical skills, experience managing complex presentations and a commitment to developing towards advanced practice.

Person Specification
Education/Qualification
- Degree or equivalent in physiotherapy
- HCPC registration
- Evidence of CPD in MSK physiotherapy in the form of a detailed personal development portfolio
- Educational attainment at level 7 in MSK
- Minimum 5 years' experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy
- MSK MSc in musculoskeletal physiotherapy
- Clinical interest group membership
- Leadership training
- Injection Therapy qualification
- Knowledge/experience of pain services
Experience
- Extensive NHS experience in musculoskeletal
- Previous experience of working as an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner autonomously.
- Experience of managing complex patients including those with red flag presentations and potentially suspicious pathology.
- Experience of teaching and training colleagues and peers in specialist skills associated with the role
- Experience of planning, organising and undertaking high level audit and research and development relevant to the service.
- A well-developed understanding of the wider context musculoskeletal health and its impact upon local health economies.
- Understanding of the role of Clinical Governance in Health Care Services and its application to MSK Physiotherapy
Skills & Knowledge
- Highly developed physical skills and manual dexterity which are used with a high degree of precision to assess and diagnose MSK disorders.
- Established planning / organisational / time management skills to ensure continuity of service and further service development
- Demonstrates the ability to develop a specific package of care for a specialised / complex patient caseload.
- Ability to complete supervision and appraisal of own and others skills
- Ability to undertake moderate physical effort including manual handling activity associated with manoeuvring patients and equipment.
- Strong team player with the ability to lead developments within their sphere of responsibility.
