This is a unique opportunity for a qualified solicitor with a passion for clinical legal education and widening access to justice. The successful candidate will take ownership of creating, managing, and evaluating The Birmingham Pro Bono programme whilst also contributing to schemes delivered nationally; ensuring that students can meaningfully engage with real-world legal work. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across campuses, external partners, and professional bodies to ensure compliance, share best practice and develop new initiatives. As a Supervising Solicitor, you will oversee student legal work, ensuring high professional standards, client care and full regulatory compliance. The role is a hybrid working role, offering flexibility to the post holder and the opportunity to make a genuine impact on the learning experience of our law students.
Responsibilities
- Design and deliver a comprehensive pro bono programme accessible to all students.
- Supervise students undertaking pro bono legal work, providing feedback, training and support to develop their legal and professional skills.
- Ensure compliance with SRA and FCA regulations, GDPR, and the University’s internal quality standards.
- Build and maintain relationships with external partners including law firms, chambers, courts, in-house legal teams and third‑sector organisations.
- Monitor and evaluate programme performance through student feedback, data analysis and regular reporting.
- Promote pro bono activity across the University community and within the wider profession.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the Employability Service to deliver national initiatives, workshops and events.
- Contribute to the University’s strategic aims by providing an exceptional experience for students and external stakeholders.
What We’re Looking For
- Qualified solicitor (eligible to practise, with indemnity insurance provided by the University).
- Minimum of 3 years’ post‑qualification experience.
- Proven ability to design and deliver effective pro bono or legal education programmes.
- Strong understanding of applied legal research and supervision.
- Excellent communication, organisation and IT skills (including Microsoft Office and Teams).
- Ability to work autonomously, meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
- Commitment to the values of access to justice and student development.
- Experience of teaching or mentoring would be desirable but not essential.
