The Role
We are looking for a Research Officer with experience of researching social media or AI platforms to join our growing and talented team. If you have a talent for investigating social media or AI platforms and want to develop your skills while helping to counter online harms, we want to hear from you.
In this role, you will have lots of opportunities to contribute ideas and develop new research, while supporting our team’s work to identify emerging harms and write impactful reports. Working as part of a project team, you will collaborate on data gathering, analysis and report writing while developing your knowledge about online harms. You will join a team that invests in staff and will offer you opportunities to publish impactful research.
Job Responsibilities
- Investigating how platforms promote hate, misinformation and harms to children.
- Following methodologies to consistently collect and analyse social media data.
- Using spreadsheets, formulas and pivot tables to organise data consistently.
- Writing clear and accurate report sections on research findings with strong referencing.
- Supporting project managers by communicating effectively about tasks and deadlines.
- Carrying out effective quality control processes on datasets and draft reports.
- Maintaining a good understanding of trends on key topics in AI and social media.
- Providing research to support the work of our policy and communications teams.
Person Specification
- Experience of producing well-written, organised and properly referenced research.
- Good understanding of social media or AI platforms and strong interest in online culture.
- Good written communication skills with experience writing briefings, articles or reports.
- Ability to contribute to a project team with clear communication on tasks and deadlines.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel formulas or pivot tables to organise and analyse data.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and resilience when working with challenging content.
- A commitment to our organisation’s values and developing your research skills.
- Experience writing original research on how social media or AI contribute to online harms.
- Experience of translating research into effective press and social media outputs.
- Experience collaborating with a team on complex projects, reports or campaigns.
- Experience of using third-party tools or coding to gather and analyse social media data.
- Experience of operating social media accounts for a cause, business or organisation.
- Experience of using project management tools and systems such as Asana or Agile.
