This position is offered as a fixed term contract until January 2027 in the first instance, with the possibility of becoming permanent.
Summary of Job
Examination of body fluid samples (e.g. blood) predominantly from Road Traffic Act (RTA) Offences. Preparation and pipetting of such samples into vials ready for extractions. Solvent/standards preparation, plus other general administration and laboratory duties to provide support to the Toxicology team. Expansion into simple extraction procedures with future training and advancement, with the potential to progress to an analyst role.
Reporting Structure
Reporting to Toxicology Laboratory Team Leader.
Essential Functions
- Check, examine and prepare bodily fluids, ready for extraction.
- Update LIMS systems and process documentation to allow accurate monitoring and rapid progression of workflow (to include batch making for extraction).
- Assessment of paperwork to determine work required (predominantly for RTA cases).
- Administration tasks, to include (but not limited to) examination queries and work request queries.
- Preparation of laboratory solutions, calibrators and quality control samples.
- Efficient stock control and ordering of non-stock items.
- General housekeeping of laboratory areas including disposal of dry and wet chemical hazard waste.
- Other general laboratory duties to include (but not limited to) glassware washing and weekly pipette calibration.
- Dependent on skills, future progression to include (but not limited to) simple extraction techniques such as Protein Precipitation or Alcohol Analysis using Gas Chromatography Flame Ionisation Detector (GCFID).
- Toxicology Instrument set-up as Technician support role.
- Working to high standards, following detailed SOPs.
- Interface with other team members and other teams.
- Liaise with Team Leader(s) and Manager(s) to ensure that quality, accuracy and safety standards are maintained.
Job Requirements
Education
A-Level or equivalent in a scientific subject, chemistry preferred.
Experience
Entry level role – some previous laboratory experience is an advantage; however full training will be provided.
Technical Skills
- Experience with Microsoft Excel/Word in order to carry out data input.
- Accurate pipette skills.
Non-Technical Skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills.

Physical Demands
- Requirement for early starts/late working/weekend working as dictated by the workload.
- Occasional carrying of quantities of liquids in open and closed containers.
- High level of concentration, particularly when carrying out repetitive tasks.
Working Conditions
The position will entail some office-based work, but will be predominantly laboratory based.
