To support the Toxicology department in relation to the administrative, sample reception, and sample return/destruction tasks associated with the management of Road Traffic Act (RTA) cases, Hair Toxicology cases and Casework Toxicology cases.

Reporting to Toxicology Administrator Team Leader

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate the receipt, return, and transfer of items submitted for forensic examination and ensuring the chain of custody and sample integrity is maintained in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Booking in samples on in-house systems ready for lab analysis. Faulting and un-faulting these samples where appropriate.
  • Ensuring reports are completed and delivered to customers in line with customer requirements and SOPs as well as closing and invoicing cases.
  • To make external and internal enquiries to resolve queries, via the phone and through emails. To monitor and manage departmental e-mail boxes
  • Managing exhibits in line with various legislation such as Protection of Freedoms Act and Human Tissue Act
  • Effectively balance priorities throughout the day and manage work in line with these identified priorities
  • Provide administrative support to the wider Toxicology team
  • Contribute to the creation, review and updating of Standard Operating Procedures
  • Be involved in the management of non-conformities, including completing Corrective Actions/Preventative Actions (CA/PA), and continuous improvement projects on time under guidance from a Team Leader
  • Additional general departmental duties as required such as assisting with casefile and sample management, data filing and supporting colleagues and team leaders with ad-hoc tasks

Job Requirements

Education

  • Basic secondary education GCSE or A levels
  • General administration or administration in a forensic environment
  • Previous laboratory experience an advantage; however full training will be provided.

Technical Skills

  • Computer, office and general administration skills.
  • Experience of MS Office programmes.

Non-Technical Skills

  • Good Communication, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills (Integrity, active listening and giving/receiving constructive feedback)
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as individually
  • Excellent organisation and effective prioritisation
  • Proactive approach and the ability to use own initiative
  • Good adaptability and openness to a changing work environment

Physical Demands

  • High levels of responsibility in a Forensic regulated environment subject to external and internal auditing. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, accurate record keeping and a responsible attitude to work being carried out. Forensic work has a high media profile, any errors or lapses in quality could result in serious adverse publicity.
  • High level of concentration, particularly when carrying out repetitive tasks
  • Sitting for periods of time and VDU usage

Working Conditions

  • Computer workstation in an air-conditioned shared office.
  • Some work will be based within a laboratory environment.
  • Flexibility of hours may be required to deal with urgent business demands
  • PPE to be worn, as required.
