Role Purpose
The Stores Lead is responsible for running the day-to-day stores and inventory operation, ensuring stock is accurate, well organised, and available to support engineers and service teams within the Operations Support department. This hands-on leadership role combines stock control, process improvement, and team coordination. As part of the role you will also be responsible for fleet management, ensuring company vehicles are well maintained, compliant, and available to support operational teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all stores activities, including goods in, goods out, storage, returns, and internal transfers
- Ensure stock is accurately recorded, labelled, and stored correctly
- Maintain appropriate stock levels to support operations while reducing excess and slow-moving stock
- Ensure materials and equipment are available when required by engineers and service teams
- Plan and carry out regular stock checks and full stock takes
- Investigate and resolve stock discrepancies
- Maintain high levels of stock accuracy and traceability
- Review current stores and inventory processes
- Introduce improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and consistency
- Support the use and improvement of inventory systems and reporting tools
- Lead and support the stores team, setting clear expectations and priorities
- Act as the main point of contact for stores-related queries
- Work closely with engineers and operational teams to ensure smooth stock flow
- Provide guidance and training on stores processes and best practice
- Produce regular reports on stock levels, usage, discrepancies, and slow-moving items
- Provide clear insights to support planning and decision-making
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe stores environment
- Ensure all stores activities comply with health & safety and company policies
- Manage day-to-day fleet activity to ensure vehicles are available, maintained, and roadworthy
- Coordinate servicing, MOTs, repairs, breakdowns, and vehicle inspections
- Maintain fleet compliance records including documentation, certificates, and driver information
- Liaise with suppliers, garages, and external partners to resolve fleet-related issues
- Support booking, allocation, and handover of vehicles where required
Skills & Experience
- Essential
- Experience in a stores, warehouse, or inventory role within an operational or service environment
- Strong understanding of stock control, goods in/out, and stock accuracy
- Experience improving processes or introducing better ways of working
- Confident using stock systems and reports (Excel or similar)
- Highly organised with strong attention to detail
- Experience leading or supervising a small team
- Experience using inventory or ERP systems
- Background in engineering, construction, security, or similar environments
- Experience in fleet management, coordination, or working with vehicle compliance (desirable, not essential)
