CEASE (Centre to End All Sexual Exploitation) is a UK-registered charity working to end the harms caused by pornography and commercial sexual exploitation. We do this through policy and advocacy, survivor-led engagement, public awareness campaigns, and thought leadership. We are a small, high-impact organisation with a passionate and committed team. Our trustees are central to our governance and strategic direction, and we are looking for people who bring both expertise and genuine belief in our mission.

To expose and dismantle the cultural and commercial driving forces behind all forms of sexual exploitation in the UK through education, awareness raising, campaigns, lobbying and advocacy. CEASE exists because people deserve better than a world shaped by an industry that profits from exploitation. We campaign for a future free from sexual harm for individuals, families and society.

Why we are recruiting

As CEASE grows and our work becomes increasingly influential, having strong financial governance at board level is essential. We are looking for an experienced Treasurer to join our Board, to provide expert oversight of our financial management and to help ensure that CEASE is well-placed to deliver on its strategy sustainably. This is a particularly important moment for us - we are investing in our team, expanding our campaigns and policy work, and building the financial foundations to support long-term impact. We need a Treasurer who can help us navigate this phase with confidence and rigour.

General Trustee Responsibilities

  • Ensure CEASE complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
  • Contribute actively to the strategic direction of CEASE, in line with our mission, aims and values.
  • Assess and manage risk, reaching well-informed and sound decisions together with the full board.
  • Monitor and evaluate organisational performance against agreed objectives and targets.
  • Together with the Chair and wider board, appoint the CEO, delegate responsibility appropriately and monitor performance.
  • Act as an ambassador for CEASE, including representing the organisation at meetings and events when required.
  • Bring an independent perspective and exercise sound, mature judgement in all board discussions.

Treasurer - Specific Responsibilities

  • Financial governance and oversight: Lead the board's duty to ensure that proper accounting records are kept and that financial resources are managed in accordance with governance, legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Work to safeguard the financial stability and long-term solvency of CEASE.
  • Advise on the financial implications of CEASE's strategic plans and annual budgets, ensuring the board can make well-informed decisions.
  • Present the annual report and accounts to trustees for formal approval, ensuring full and clear appraisal of the contents.
  • Reserves and financial risk: Regularly assess and monitor CEASE's reserves position, keeping the board informed and advising on whether the reserves policy needs to be reviewed in light of changing financial circumstances.
  • Support the board in understanding and managing financial risk, including income concentration risk, planned deficits and cash flow position.
  • Supporting the CEO and operations: Provide expert financial guidance and challenge to the CEO or Director of Operations on matters relating to financial planning, budgeting and reporting.
  • Review management accounts and financial reports ahead of board meetings and raise queries or concerns in a timely way.
  • Support the development of financial processes and policies that enable CEASE to operate sustainably and with strong internal controls.

Skills and Experience

We are looking for someone who brings the following:

  • Qualified accountant or equivalent senior financial management experience (e.g. FCA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA or comparable).
  • Experience of financial planning, budgeting, management accounts and financial reporting.
  • Strong understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship for a UK charity.
  • Understanding of the UK voluntary sector context, including charity accounting requirements (SORP).
  • Experience of providing both support and constructive challenge to a CEO or senior leadership team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
  • Previous trustee or non-executive director experience.
  • Experience of working with or within small charities or mission-driven organisations.
  • Familiarity with issues relating to sexual exploitation, gender-based violence or related fields.
  • Experience of fundraising, grant management or charity income generation.
