County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) operates a central Sterile Services Department (SSD) based at University Hospital of North Durham (UHND). The purpose of the SSD is to supply surgical teams with all the equipment required for clean, sterile procedures. SSD collects from and delivers to operating theatres, departments, wards and clinics throughout the Trust. The SSD is a crucial part of the surgical service, ensuring that instruments needed for operations are properly sterilised and maintained, and that the risk of patient infections is minimised. The successful candidate will join a team of experienced SSD staff working alongside our wider clinical teams.

Main duties of the job:

  • The SSD Technician duties include the receipt of used equipment from theatres and wards, the decontamination and sterilisation of instruments, inspection and packing for delivery back to clinical teams.

About us:

SCL is a wholly owned subsidiary of County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) set up to deliver a range of non-clinical services. The company is a separate legal body to CDDFT. SCL offers its own Terms and Conditions of employment which differ to the national NHS Terms and Conditions. As an employee in the company you will benefit from:

Job responsibilities:

To join the team, we are looking for the following:

  • Excellent attention to detail as the work demands a high level of accuracy and concentration
  • Good communication skills, and the ability to work well within the team
  • Be approachable and enthusiastic, with a positive attitude
  • Previous experience in a similar environment would be preferred, but full training will be provided.

This post involves manual dexterity and moving equipment that can be physically demanding.

Person Specification:

  • Ability to undertake the physical demands of the job.
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
  • Be able to carry out weekend working, and also shift working when required.

Special Skills & Knowledge:

  • Ability to follow instructions and written procedures.
  • Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and telephone manner.
  • Effective personal workload organisation/ prioritising skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, methodically and flexibly to ensure that performance management targets are achieved.
  • Knowledge of data protection.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety and PPE.
  • Evidence of using technical equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Good general education or equivalent knowledge gained through work experience.
  • Willingness to undertake any training/educational programme considered necessary to enhance performance in the role.
  • Achieved or willing to work towards NVQ or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Previous experience of working in a busy environment, providing a professional service.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Previous Sterile Services or NHS experience.
