We have an exciting opportunity to offer either a fixed‑term or permanent contract for the role of Paediatric Speciality Doctor (Middle Grade) to join our paediatric team at University Hospital of North Durham.
This is a full‑time non‑training middle‑grade post that contributes to the Tier 2 acute paediatric rota.
The post holder will have Tier 2 on‑call experience both within general paediatrics and neonates, and will work as an integral member of the paediatric team at the middle‑grade level.
Main duties of the post
- Provision of inpatient paediatric and neonatal service, including providing 2nd on‑call cover for high‑risk deliveries.
- Contribution to the on‑call middle‑grade rota for managing a range of paediatric and neonatal emergencies (1 in 8 daytime and 1 in 10 out of hours provision of on‑call cover, evenings, weekends and night shifts).
- Rota includes standard 0900‑1700 shifts, long days 0900‑2100, twilight shifts 1400‑2200 and night shifts 2030‑0930, including similar hours during weekends.
- Training and refresher for NLS, EPALS and safeguarding level 2 & 3 provided within the Trust.
- Opportunity for outpatient care (for experienced candidates) under the direction and supervision of a Consultant Paediatrician.
- Supervised assessment of children presenting with child‑protection concerns.
- Participation in the audit programme and medical student teaching.
- Attendance at departmental, educational and clinical governance meetings.
- Encouragement of quality improvement projects, abstracts and regional presentations.
- Limited study leave and budget to support professional development.
- Practice for MRCPCH clinical exams supported through local and regional mentoring.
Experience
- Relevant paediatric experience, including post in tertiary neonatology as 2nd on‑call (Registrar level experience).
- All ST3 equivalent competences.
- Current or previous experience of working in the NHS.
- Satutory Registration
- Full registration with the GMC.
Qualifications
- M. B. B. S or equivalent.
- MRCPCH part‑1.
- MRCPCH (full).
- MSc in Paediatrics.
- Special Skills & Knowledge
- Ability to independently perform cannulation, umbilical catheterisation, intubation and lumbar puncture in newborn babies.
- NLS and APLS provider.
- Understanding of audit.
- Motivated to teach juniors and students.
- Good communicator, active listener, able to be a team leader and player.
- Experience within PICU or paediatric subspecialties.
- Completed audit cycle.
- Teaching and training courses.
- Special Requirements
- Enthusiastic and willing to participate in day‑to‑day management of the department.
- Honest, dependable.
