County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Specialist Dietitian. We particularly welcome applications from disabled and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates as BAME and disabled people are currently under-represented.
Main duties of the job:
- This post is to provide dietetic care to the bariatric MDT and general wards.
- The post holder will be based at Darlington Memorial Hospital but may occasionally be required to cover other areas within County Durham and Darlington including University Hospital North Durham and Chester Le Street Hospital.
- The post holder will provide bariatric dietetic support to patients pre- and post-surgery in MDT clinics, dedicated dietetic clinics and wards.
- General ward work includes medical and surgical dietetics.
Job responsibilities:
- The post holder will be responsible for their own caseload referred to the service via the bariatric MDT.
- Patients will be seen in a variety of settings including hospital wards, outpatient clinics and telephone clinics.
- The post holder will work closely with other dietitians and members of the wider multidisciplinary team.
- The post holder will also work with the ward-based dietetic team, triage, assess and plan dietetic treatment for patients in an acute ward setting.
- The department trains dietetic students (Placements A, B and C) and the post holder will have an active role in student training, planning, coordination and assessment.
The Nutrition and Dietetic service is structured into teams: secondary care (nutrition support and critical care), bariatrics, primary care (care home training), adult & paediatric diabetes, adult Home Enteral Feeding, paediatrics (Home Enteral Feeding and paediatric weight management). The service comprises 6 teams, 49 dietitians, 1 specialist nurse, 4 dietetic assistants and central administration across four sites in County Durham.
Special Skills & Knowledge:
- Completion of post-graduate specialist education (e.g., PENG course or other).
- Ability to plan, initiate and evaluate new services and manage change.
- Highly developed understanding of the changing NHS environment and its impact on service provision and staff.
- Understanding of local and national strategies and policies relating to nutrition, health and social care relevant to community dietetics.
- Member of BDA.
- Experience of using SystmOne and Cerner.
Special Requirements:
- Able to meet the travel requirements of the post.
Qualifications:
- Clinical supervisory skills.
- Leadership training.
- Working towards or hold Masters Degree.
- Completion of PENG course.
Experience:
- Previous experience working in a variety of clinical settings.
- Experience working within MDT environments.
- Previous experience of audit and research including submission/presentation to journals/conferences.
- Previous experience working within nutrition support and bariatrics.
Statutory Registration:
- Registered with the Health Care Professions Council.

Salary: £39,959 to £48,117 a year (AFC Band 6 per annum pro rata).
