Consultant in Respiratory Medicine

This is an exciting time to join the Acute Medicine and Medicine Specialties Teams at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. Our patient‑focused services aim to provide high‑quality clinical care. We are seeking dynamic and innovative individuals to enhance and develop respiratory services, including ward and Respiratory Support Units, large lung cancer service, bronchoscopy and EBUS procedures, and general respiratory clinics. This vision is supported by investments in radiological infrastructure and our physiology, lung function and sleep diagnostic services.
Main duties of the job
Successful candidates will join a team of 10 respiratory consultants and 1 SAS doctor across our two acute sites. The service is supported by specialist respiratory nurses and diagnostic services. Post‑holders will undertake outpatient clinics at their main base site and cover clinics at a community hospital. Clinics include general respiratory and cancer clinics. There are opportunities for sub‑specialty areas for those interested, up to a maximum of 2 PA roles.
The ward work at UHND is covered via a weekly specialty rota (in‑hours only). Post‑holders will take part in an unselected medical on‑call rota on the Acute Medical Unit alongside physician colleagues and acute care physicians.
Procedures (EBUS, bronchoscopy and pleural work) are undertaken on our main acute sites and supported by medical day units.
Applicants wishing to combine clinical work with a research or educational career will be supported with opportunities for academic roles.
Job responsibilities
The post supports existing respiratory services. Responsibilities include delivering specialist investigations and treatment for asthma, COPD, lung cancer, sleep‑disordered breathing, pleural disease, interstitial lung disease and infections. The department runs MDTs for lung cancer and SPN, and links to ILD, home ventilation and difficult asthma services. In‑patient care is delivered on a dedicated 41‑bed respiratory ward at UHND with 8 beds for NIV and HFNO. A physician‑of‑the‑week model (1:5 rotation) oversees all in‑patients.
We are developing a community‑based role to bring respiratory care closer to home as part of the Respiratory Rightcare project with community services.
Person specification
- Full and specialist registration with GMC and licence to practice.
- Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of attaining CCT at interview.
- Or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
- MBBS or equivalent.
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- Certificate of Medical Education.
Qualifications
- Experience of lung cancer investigation and management.
- Experience of medical teaching.
Special skills & knowledge
- Clinical skills to provide expert opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective.
- Competence in bronchoscopy, pleural ultrasound and related procedures.
- Demonstrated NHS management skills and ability to organise own work.
- Ability to delegate appropriately to trainees/non‑consultants.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience supervising trainees.
- Experience and understanding of audit and conducting clinical audit.
- Ability to use evidence base to support decision making.

Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per year, YC72 Pay Scale per annum pro rata.
