Job Overview

The Maternity Support Worker will provide care to women, birthing people and families throughout the antenatal and postnatal period in the Antenatal Clinic Outpatients unit at the Darlington or Durham site. The role includes support for the midwifery team, education, safety, infant feeding support and public health promotion.

Responsibilities

  • Support care of women and birthing people during antenatal and postnatal periods.
  • Assist the midwifery team with patient education, support and clinical care.
  • Carry out routine clinical observations, including pulse, temperature, blood pressure, and report deviations.
  • Provide infant feeding support and education.
  • Support parent education and discussions on health promotion.
  • Perform manual blood pressure measurements and venepuncture as required.
  • Administer administrative duties and maintain accurate records.
  • Contribute to the safety and well‑being of patients and staff.
  • Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Care Certificate or willingness to complete within the first 6 months of commencement.
  • GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English.
  • Previous experience in a maternity setting.
  • HCA experience within an NHS setting.
  • Ability to carry out clinical observations, recognising and reporting deviations from the norm.

Experience

  • Experience in a health care setting.
  • Maternity or neonatal experience or extensive reading on maternity themes.

Special Requirements

  • Proven ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
  • Approachable and able to build relationships with a wide variety of colleagues.
  • Full driving licence or ability to travel independently.

Special Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to use initiative.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Experience in teaching and education of groups of service users or colleagues.
  • Clinical observation skills: pulse, temperature, blood pressure recording.
