ENT Consultant, DMH

The Department of ENT is seeking a substantive full‑time (10 PA) Consultant to join an enthusiastic and forward‑thinking Department that has six substantive consultants. Each consultant has a specialist interest which they are happy to pursue. The Department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and is looking for an individual with appropriate specialist skills in thyroid disease to complement the existing team and keep the service at the forefront of clinical excellence.
Responsibilities
• Manage general ENT conditions with a special interest in thyroid surgery, attending the regional Thyroid MDT and complying with its guidance.
• Provide ENT emergencies that are managed in a DGH.
• Involve in training specialist registrars, foundation doctors and GP trainees.
• Attend four clinics, two theatre sessions and a 1:6 on‑call rota.
• Deliver the care plan for four outpatient clinics and two operating sessions, ensuring efficient operation of the unit.
About Us
We provide hospital services from two acute sites – Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We also have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals at Chester‑Le‑Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale, as well as over 80 other community‑based settings and patients’ homes.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Full Registration with the GMC
- Completion of higher training (CCT or within 6 months of obtaining) or CESR
- Post CCT Fellowship
Experience
- Provide sound clinical opinion on a range of acute medical conditions.
- Take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
- Manage and lead medical/surgical teams.
- Lead on the smooth and efficient running of the unit.
- Organise, prioritise and manage a high‑intensity workload.
- Supervise junior medical staff.
- Commit to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students.
- Participate in audit.
- Extrapolate clinical research evidence to care patients.
- Develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery.
- Participate in quality improvement projects.
- Conduct a practice‑changing audit.
- Teach/training in clinical courses such as IMPACT Course, Faculty, ALS Instructor, ALERT Instructor.
- Publish original peer‑reviewed research.

Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 a year (YC72 Pay Scale per annum, pro‑rata).
