Overview

The Plastic Surgery department provides outpatient clinics and inpatient/day case treatment across multiple sites including Darlington Memorial Hospital, the University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital, Shotley Bridge Hospital, Sedgefield Community Hospital and Chester‑Le‑Street Hospital. The post is based at the University Hospital of North Durham with clinics and theatres at Darlington Memorial Hospital and Bishop Auckland.

The basic contract is 10 + 1 programmed activities plus a 1:8 on‑call week. The post holder will spend most programmed activities at the University Hospital of North Durham, with responsibilities at other sites within the trust.

Responsibilities

General plastic surgery and reconstructive services to an estimated population of 1.4 million across South Durham, Bishop Auckland and Darlington, including skin cancer surgery, upper‑limb surgery and microsurgery free‑flap reconstruction.

• Provide comprehensive plastic surgery service, including elective and trauma care, with a 1.8 trauma commitment.
• Maintain inpatient, day‑case and outpatient clinics and theatre lists on the main site and supporting sites.
• Participate in trauma and emergency operating, morning trauma clinics, and shared theatre arrangements.
• Supervise and mentor junior staff, ensuring professional and educational development.
• Contribute to postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduate attachment.
• Engage in clinical audit, governance, and research activities, with funding support where possible.
• Ensure compliance with CPD requirements and attend educational sessions.
• Represent the department in strategic planning and service development.
• Participate in clinical governance and full indemnity duties, including providing free‑of‑charge opinions on claims.
• Deputise for colleagues during absences, ensuring continuous patient care.

Person Specification Qualifications

• Medical Degree
• License to practice
• MRCS / FRCS or equivalent
• Full and specialist registration with the GMC (including Licence to Practice)
• Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of attaining CCT at interview.

Special Skills & Knowledge

• Hand trauma experience
• Complex hand cases
• Skin cancer surgery experience
• Good overall experience of elective plastic surgery and all aspects of plastic surgery trauma and hand surgery
• Microsurgery experience
• Management skills and ability to manage own time
• Audit skills and evidence of previous clinical audit involvement
• Teaching skills and evidence of teaching junior staff

Experience

• Skin cancer, microsurgery reconstruction and general plastic surgery trauma management
• Contribution to audit and research
• Contribution to teaching

Special Requirements

• Willingness and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
• Proven teamwork and liaison skills with other specialties
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to cope with stress and maintain discipline and motivation
• Ability to travel independently across sites

Statutory Registration

• Full and specialist GMC registration
• CCT or within 6 months of attaining CCT
