We are seeking a part time Band 6 Epilepsy specialist nurse to join our team of epilepsy nurses based at Chester Le Street Hospital. The successful applicant will work across the North Durham Area and surrounding villages, offering specialist epilepsy advice to patients within their own homes, in various clinics or via the telephone. The service is delivered over five days Monday to Friday with core hours of 9am to 4pm; some flexibility may be required occasionally.
The successful applicant will be required to hold a first level nursing registration with the NMC, with additional role-specific training that can be provided.
Main duties of the job:The successful applicant will work within the Epilepsy Specialist nursing team to provide both planned and reactive care to patients with an Epilepsy diagnosis. This will involve running face to face and telephone clinics in community settings. They will have experience of managing a caseload of patients who live with epilepsy and whose care can be complex with additional lifestyle issues and comorbidities. They will need to work as part of a team as well as independently in community settings across the region including HMP services.
Job responsibilities:The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in providing excellent nursing care to people living with epilepsy. They will be willing to undertake additional training to enhance their knowledge on Epilepsy, including NICE guidance and quality standards, treatment options and challenges.
The candidate will provide a range of nursing care activities with patients including:
- Assessment and review of epilepsy
- Monitoring of seizure activity and treatment side effects
- Care planning including treatment options and prescribing (additional training can be provided)
- Educating patients and carers about epilepsy
- Risk management assessment and advice
- Deliver epilepsy awareness and rescue medication training to patients and carers
The successful candidate will be required to manage a caseload of patients with uncontrolled epilepsy, working independently and as part of the wider nursing team. Some travel across the locality, including rural areas, will be involved. Clinics operate over the CDDFT area and within clinic environments in hospitals, patients' own homes, GP practices and HMP establishments.
Person Specification:Experience:
- Experience of working with people who live with epilepsy
- Evidence of recent ongoing nursing development
- Experience of clinical supervision
- Experience of audit/research
Special Requirements:
- Able to travel across Trust sites and patient homes to meet the requirements of the post
- Driving posts must have valid Full UK driving licence
Qualifications:
- 1st level Registration with NMC (Adult or LD)
- Knowledge of epilepsy care and issues for management
- Knowledge of issues in community / epilepsy nursing
- Knowledge of key policy drivers for health and social care
Statutory Registration:
- 1st Level Registration with NMC (Adult / LD)
Special Skills & Knowledge:
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Evidence of organisational skills
- Evidence of teamwork
- Independent prescriber qualification, or willingness to train towards this
