We are looking for a full‑time permanent Biomedical Scientist in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion area. The role is based at Darlington Memorial Hospital, with travel to other Trust sites as required. The Department of Blood Sciences processes 1500‑2000 samples per day and offers a busy laboratory environment.
The successful candidate will work as a proactive member of the Blood Sciences Team, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to multitask, organise, and prioritise under pressure. Relevant experience within the last three years in a UK laboratory in Haematology, Transfusion or Biochemistry is preferred.
Main duties:
- Maintain and run automated analysers, perform QC, investigate and troubleshoot failures and spurious results.
- Perform manual tests, staining, record results and examine blood smears under the microscope.
- Book patient samples on the Laboratory Computer System and ensure correct test requests.
- Centrifuge samples, authorise results and forward abnormalities to Consultant Haematologists as required.
- Manage pending test lists, prioritise urgent work to meet turnaround times.
- Perform blood group and antibody identification, cross‑match blood and products, and manage blood stocks.
- Answer telephone queries and liaise with other Trust staff and the public.
- Maintain stock control: order, receive and document reagent batches, perform verification tasks.
- Assist in the training and competency assessment of Associate and MLA staff.
- Complete all quality documentation, training, competency and CPD records.
Qualifications and registration:
- BSc in Biomedical Sciences.
- IBMS Certificate of Competence (Registration Training Portfolio).
- HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
- Working towards the IBMS Specialist Diploma (preferred).
- ECDL certificate.
Other requirements:
- Ability to travel across Trust sites.
- Availability for out‑of‑hours work and shift system (day, late, night, weekends, bank holidays).
- Organisation, prioritisation, communication, manual dexterity and precise work performance.
