Fenris Creations are seeking a Senior Lighting & VFX Artist to help shape the visual identity, atmosphere, and moment-to-moment impact of EVE: Vanguard, an exciting first-person shooter set in the EVE Universe. As a senior Lighting and VFX artist, you will create high-quality lighting and real-time visual effects that bring Vanguard’s worlds, combat spaces, weapons, and environments to life. This role requires strong ownership, proactive problem-solving, and the ability to influence both creative and technical decisions. You will proactively collaborate with Art, Design, TA, Gameplay and Rendering to ensure lighting and VFX not only look exceptional, but also remain readable, responsive, and optimized for target hardware. If you are passionate about building immersive worlds, delivering impactful combat feedback, and setting a high bar for visual quality in a modern shooter, this is an opportunity to define and own a critical part of the player experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Create high-quality, production-ready lighting for FPS levels in Unreal Engine 5.
- Define and implement lighting strategies that support navigation, player focus, enemy visibility, and moment-to-moment combat readability.
- Work with Lumen, reflections, shadows, exposure, fog, post-processing, and colour grading.
- Create real-time VFX using Niagara, including weapon effects, impacts, explosions, smoke, fire, sparks, environmental effects, and gameplay feedback.
- Optimize lighting and VFX for target hardware while maintaining visual quality.
- Profile and improve performance related to GPU cost, shadows, Lumen, translucency, particles, post-processing, and volumetrics.
- Collaborate with level designers to ensure lighting and VFX support gameplay flow.
- Partner with Environment Art to elevate scene composition, material response, emissive usage, and lighting integration.
- Debug lighting and VFX issues such as artifacts, exposure problems, reflection issues, overdraw, and performance bottlenecks.
- Create reusable lighting and VFX setups, guidelines, and best practices.
- Take part in reviews, playtests, polish passes, and performance passes.
- Lead by example in reviews, playtests, polish passes, and performance passes, providing clear and actionable feedback.
- Mentor and support other artists, contributing to team growth and raising overall craft quality.
- Act as a key stakeholder in cross-discipline discussions, influencing decisions that impact visual direction and player experience.
Your Profile
- Senior-level experience as a Lighting Artist, VFX Artist, Technical Artist, or similar role in game development.
- Strong hands-on experience with Unreal Engine 5.
- Good understanding of Lumen, real-time lighting, post-processing, reflections, shadows, fog, and exposure.
- Strong experience creating real-time VFX in Niagara.
- Excellent artistic eye for mood, composition, colour, contrast, visual hierarchy, and player focus.
- Good technical understanding of real-time rendering and performance optimization.
- Able to balance visual quality with gameplay readability and hardware limitations.
- Experience optimizing lighting and VFX for different hardware targets.
- Comfortable using profiling tools to identify and solve performance issues.
- Understanding of shader complexity, overdraw, particle budgets, translucency, shadow cost, and scalability.
- Experience working on FPS, action, or gameplay-focused environments is a strong plus.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across art, design, and engineering teams.
- Portfolio showing strong lighting, atmosphere, VFX, and technical problem-solving in Unreal Engine.
- Experience working on multiplayer or live-service games.
- Colour Grading in both Da Vinci and UE5.
