To be the Subject matter expert and ensure full compliance with all UK excise regulations relating to the movement of excise goods (alcohol). This role is responsible for managing all excise-related duties within the UK, including the accurate preparation of documentation and the use of HMRC systems such as EMCS and CDS. The position also supports the export process by coordinating export logistics, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring that all relevant excise licences are current, with a clear understanding of the requirements for obtaining and maintaining them.
Key Accountabilities
- Maintain up-to-date excise manuals, SOPs, and due diligence packs, ensuring compliance with current legislation.
- Monitor and interpret changes in excise duty legislation, advising the business accordingly.
- Perform testing when duty changes occur to ensure compliance.
- Complete EMCS receipts and removals.
- Ensure timely and accurate Excise returns, APPA, Wx Returns and W5D’s, addressing discrepancies and maintaining compliance with UK excise regulations.
- Report on key excise compliance KPIs and ensure targets are met.
- Oversee SEED checks to ensure compliance with excise regulations.
- Manage duty drawback documentation and ensure timely duty reporting.
Customs Responsibilities
Due to the limited size of the team, the individual will be trained internally to cover absence periods and remain flexible to take on other job functions as needed for holiday coverage. Generate and produce CDS Export documentation.
Skills / Experience Required
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in dealing with excise processes, documentation and returns.
- Experience working within a FMCG environment, preferably within the drinks industry alongside a history of operational experience in an excise environment.
- Extensive knowledge of excise processes and regulations.
- Knowledge of export procedures would be preferable, but training will be provided to the right individual.
- Proactive in finding alternative solutions to overcome constraints.
- Provide training on excise awareness and EMCS.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to identify and build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent Microsoft 365 skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel, alongside strong numerical and analytical abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
- Comfortable exporting and organising data sets in Excel for analysis.
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines.
