St Albans Museums Service are seeking a dynamic and passionate workshop educator to join our team of museum teaching delivery staff.

We run a wide range of workshops across three of our sites: Verulamium Museum of Roman Everyday Life, St Albans Museum + Gallery, and the medieval St Albans Clocktower.

We offer sessions across a range of historical periods, from Romans to the modern day.

Sessions are written and designed to support both National Curriculum topics and skills, with a particular focus on change over time, similarity and difference, and moments of both local, national and international significance.

You will teach with us on a casual basis at mutually agreed times and in response to service demands and bookings.

This will be up to a maximum of four hour-long sessions per day (with lunch break).

You will need to be available during term time and between 10am and 3.30pm for this role and will be able to submit specific availability two months in advance.

There is also some school holiday work, running craft sessions for families, and occasional evening work teaching uniform groups available should it be of interest, but this is not required and does not make up the majority of the work.

There are some physical demands of this job, due to the historic nature of some of our teaching locations.

If this is of concern or if you need more information please feel free to contact us prior to an application.

The workload varies considerably across the school year.

On average, you can expect work in the range of 3-12 hours per week over 1- 4 days.

The ideal candidate would have availability across the week, and we have particular gaps on Wednesdays and Fridays.

St Albans Museums is open to all and as an organisation we are committed to encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion in our workplace.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates that are under-represented in the museums and heritage sector, including candidates from the global majority, candidates from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, candidates with a disability, and/or candidates with non-typical educational routes into heritage sector work.

About you

  • Be an excellent communicator, passionate about sharing knowledge with others and in particular, young people and school children.

We work with a wide range of ages and abilities (Early Years, Key Stage 1-5 and beyond) but at a minimum you would need to be willing to teach Key Stages 2 and 3 (children aged 7-15 years).

  • Have experience of facilitating and delivering high quality, high energy learning experiences, either in school or in a museum/gallery/arts/theatre/youth centre or other similar environment. (Qualified teacher status not required.)
  • Be a confident and charismatic presenter, able to lead sessions centring history teaching through storytelling, as well as object-centric handling sessions.
  • Be flexible, reliable and work effectively in a team.
  • Have excellent time keeping and classroom/group management.
  • Have a passion for objects, collections, history, art and culture and be prepared to develop that knowledge to understand the stories inspired by the collections of St Albans Museums on an ongoing basis.
  • Be committed to inclusive teaching practises, and either have some knowledge of how to adapt sessions to accommodating additional learning needs/SEND or be willing to develop this.

A history specialism and/or confident subject knowledge across a range of historical periods would be an advantage.

Full training will be provided. A basic DBS check is required for this post.
