An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced engineering leader to take ownership of an R&D team within a growing organisation operating in the medical devices / highly regulated engineering sector. This position has become available due to a planned retirement, offering a great opportunity for a smooth handover while also stepping into a role of real impact. You will also take ownership of a critical next-generation product development programme mid-way through its lifecycle, making this a highly visible and business-critical appointment.
The Role
- Lead all aspects of engineering, product development and NPI, from early-stage concept and feasibility through to manufacturing, production and ongoing product support.
- Quickly embed into an existing, high-priority next-generation development project, ensuring delivery to time, budget and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead R&D, product development and NPI (New Product Introduction) across the full lifecycle.
- Take ownership of a critical, in-flight next generation product programme.
- Deliver complex electromechanical / mechatronic product development projects.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 13485, UK/EU MDR, and quality management systems.
- Oversee design control, validation, verification, and engineering change management.
- Manage and develop a high-performing engineering and R&D team.
- Collaborate with quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and commercial teams.
- Drive innovation, continuous improvement, and cost optimisation initiatives.
- Work with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and third-party design consultants.
About You
- Proven leadership experience within engineering, product development, or NPI environments.
- Strong background in medical devices, life sciences, or regulated industries.
- Deep understanding of ISO13485, MDR, regulatory compliance, and design control.
- Experience delivering NPI programmes, R&D projects, and product development strategies.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, BOM management, ERP systems, and CAD tools.
- Ability to step into and lead live, complex projects mid-cycle.
- Strong commercial awareness, including budget management and cost control.
