  • Mainframe Engineer - Datacom IBM Z
  • 3 month initial contract + expected extensions
  • Paying upto £500 per day - Inside IR35
  • Fully remote

Role Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Mainframe Datacom Engineer to support and enhance critical banking applications within a large-scale IBM Z/z/OS environment.

You will be responsible for the administration, support, optimisation and modernisation of Broadcom Datacom databases, working closely with application development, infrastructure, DBA and international teams across Spain and Latin America.

Spanish language skills are highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and support Broadcom Datacom/CA Datacom databases on z/OS.
  • Perform database provisioning, configuration, monitoring, capacity planning and performance tuning.
  • Undertake backup, recovery, reorganisation and database maintenance using Datacom utilities.
  • Monitor availability and proactively resolve database and application performance issues.
  • Support incident, problem and change management processes.
  • Support IBM Z infrastructure, batch processing and associated Mainframe technologies.
  • Work with JCL, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, CICS, VSAM and RACF.
  • Support Cobol-based applications and troubleshoot database/application issues.
  • Assist with application releases, technical design and performance optimisation.
  • Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity exercises.
  • Contribute to Mainframe modernisation, automation, API enablement, CI/CD and Dev Ops initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency through Scripting and automation.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong hands-on experience with Broadcom Datacom/CA Datacom.
  • Excellent knowledge of Datacom architecture, utilities, database structures and performance tuning.
  • Experience with backup/recovery, reorganisation and capacity management.
  • Extensive IBM z/OS experience.
  • Strong knowledge of JCL, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, CICS, VSAM, RACF and batch processing.
  • Experience supporting Cobol applications.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capability.
  • Understanding of database security, access control and audit requirements.
  • Experience working within large-scale enterprise or highly regulated environments.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management and documentation skills.

Desirable

  • Spanish language skills - professional/fluent level highly desirable.
  • Banking, payments or financial services experience.
  • Experience with Dev Ops, automation and CI/CD.
  • Knowledge of Git, Jenkins, Ansible, Urban Code or similar tooling.
  • Experience with API integration and application modernisation.
  • Exposure to hybrid cloud and distributed platform integration with Mainframe environments.
  • Agile delivery experience.
  • Broadcom Datacom certification or equivalent practical experience.
