Job Title: HV Protection Engineer

Role Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Power Protection Engineer to support the testing, commissioning, and validation of electrical power systems and protection equipment. This role ensures that new and refurbished electrical plant and protection systems operate safely and in full compliance with manufacturer specifications, company procedures, and operational requirements.

The role involves a structured commissioning approach from individual component testing through to full system energization, ensuring system integrity during operation compliance.

Working as part of a Mobile four-person team in London and surrounding area’s . Working week will involve sub inspections and non-intrusive works inspections over a diverse portfolio of buildings. Intrusive Maintenance will be planned and completed Out of Hours and incorporated in wages forfifteen maintenance activities over the year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Test electrical power plant and protection systems across power generation, transmission, and distribution environments
  • Carry out maintenance activities from component-level testing to full system energisation
  • Verify that plant and equipment meet operational, safety, and performance standards
  • Diagnose faults, perform fault analysis, and implement corrective actions
  • Monitor system performance during initial operation and ensure reliability
  • Produce and review technical documentation and commissioning reports
  • Ensure all activities are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to quality standards
  • Provide technical guidance and support to colleagues and stakeholders
  • Plan, prioritise, and schedule commissioning activities

Technical Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong understanding of electrical power systems and associated plant and equipment
  • Knowledge of high voltage generation, transmission, and distribution systems

Understanding of:

  • Protection, control, and telemetry systems
  • Fault analysis methods and system behaviour
  • Commissioning procedures and practices
  • Failure modes and system impact
  • Electrical network operations and topologies
  • Relevant standards, regulations, and policies
  • Experience selecting and using appropriate testing and commissioning equipment

Key Skills

  • Ability to apply analytical and engineering principles to real-world scenarios
  • Competence in high voltage safe systems of work and risk management
  • Proficient in using a wide range of electrical test equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics
  • Strong report writing and documentation skills
  • Effective communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders

Plant

  • Testing, commissioning, and maintenance of:
  • Transformers
  • Switchgear
  • Conductors
  • Battery systems
  • Ancillary equipment

Protection

  • Functional testing and commissioning of protection systems
  • Injection testing (current and voltage) to simulate fault conditions
  • Configuration and validation of:
  • Microprocessor-based protection relays
  • Numerical protection systems
  • Electromechanical relays
  • Ensuring correct integration with high voltage systems

Qualifications

  • GCSE English (Grade B or equivalent)
  • A Levels (Grade C or above) in Maths and/or Science
  • Level 2 English and Maths required (if not already achieved)
  • 3 years Previous experience in industrial electrical maintenance, switchgearmaintenance, or power networks.
  • Completed course on Maintenance of Electrical Switchgear or demonstratable experience of minimum three years working in industry
  • Completed course in Transformer Construction, Testing & Maintenance or demonstratable experience of minimum three years working in industry
  • Completed a course or demonstrable knowledge of HV Protection testing or demonstratable experience of minimum three years working in industry
  • Desirable experience and qualifications
  • Industry recognized Thermal image training or demonstratable experience of minimum three years.
  • Industry recognized Partial Discharge Training or demonstratable experience of minimum three years.

  • Apprenticeship Level: Level 4
  • Typical Duration: 36 months
  • Professional Registration:
  • Eligible for Engineering Technician (EngTech)
  • Progression pathway to Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
