The position of the Data Centre Engineering Manager is key to the technical operations of the building and its infrastructure. As the post holder, you will be expected to have a detailed understanding of the installed building services systems, contingency procedures and be proactive in passing on this knowledge to other members of the Site Personnel. The Data Centre Engineering Manager will also be expected to become familiar with aspects of the administrative and engineering operations within the contract.
In general, your role will be to ensure the efficient operation of the critical and non-critical engineering services, PC based systems and the associated plant, achieving 100% availability. Working closely with the Engineering team, the Data Centre Engineering Manager role will be to act as a technical coordination point for the day-to-day maintenance activities, including the Specialist Subcontractors, Suppliers and other support teams. One of the key activities involves the role of a HV authorised person.
You will be the technical reference point for the completion of the necessary permits to ensure compliance with method statements, risk assessments, Supplier Health and Safety procedures. You will ensure that the conduct of any personnel under your control is safe, professional, and conscientious. You will be required to attend site meetings with the client to ensure the highest engineering standards are achieved and maintained at all times by both 3rd party specialist and engineering staff alike. To oversee competencies of 3rd party specialist and engineering staff, train, coach, and mentor the engineering team to ensure maximum critical infrastructure uptime.
Key Tasks
- Supervise, coordinate and manage the Supplier Site Personnel technical competences for all building plant and systems.
- Operate all systems within the buildings in a competent, effective and efficient manner (including HV isolations/operations), having due regard to business risk and energy use.
- Make recommendations for improvement and provide concise technical reports when required.
- Control all activities relating to the technical and efficient operation of the installed building systems.
- Ensure that for Specialist Sub Contractors visits have been prepared and approved Standard Operating Procedures/ MOP/PTW/change requests.
- Ensure that Specialist Sub Contractor worksheets are signed off where necessary, that quality of work has been inspected and recommendations are communicated by the Site Personnel.
- Ensure the team and Sub Contractors comply with the contractual service level agreements (SLA’s).
- Take a leading role in the regular review of the PPM system ensuring both work scheduling and job descriptions are accurate.
- Attend weekly operations meetings, client meetings as requested, in conjunction with the Account Manager.
- Assist Contract Manager in completing the Monthly and Quarterly Engineering Report.
- Prepare information to be included in the Supplier monthly site reports.
- Ensure the asset database and electronic O&M systems are correct and up to date.
- Monitor utilities usage and report to the client on any abnormalities or energy savings.
- Management of critical engineering infrastructure.
- Compilation of control of engineering risk register and report on critical systems availability.
- Review of engineering competency, skills gaps and future training, ensuring contract is staffed by competent teams, ensuring post holders are fully competent and that effective succession planning arrangements are in place.
- Ensure that engineers’ knowledge and understanding of critical infrastructures is at an appropriate level.
- Management of onsite critical spares.
- Compilation of critical incident & near miss reporting and after-action reviews.
- Ensure all critical equipment maintenance is undertaken in line with requirements.
- Ensure all critical equipment operational issues are brought to the Customers attention immediately and provide all relevant reports with recommendations.
- Production of quotation for critical infrastructure enhancement/remedial works.
- Implementation of site-specific standard and emergency operating procedures.
- Implementation of critical infrastructure scenario plans.
- Oversee statutory certification and QHSE compliance.
- Management of escalation of Specialist Sub Contractors issues.
- Ensure all technical/ legislative updates are effectively communicated and implemented by the engineering team.
- On call Management support of engineering resource.
- Contribute to the overall Business Continuity and Risk Mitigation plan.
Personal Qualities
- Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in Data Centre or Critical Environment operations.
- HV Authorised Person.
- 18th Edition amendment 2: Wiring and Installation, or willing to achieve.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to deal with all levels of staff.
- Ability to lead, motivate and direct a small team of Engineers.
- Proactive in achieving the highest standard of operation.
- Good IT and report writing skills.
- Individuals who can demonstrate commitment and previous site experience; but not meet all the required technical qualifications may be considered subject to client approval.
- Ability to work under pressure whilst remaining calm, clear thinking and able to deliver the required services to the client within given time constraints.
- Enthusiasm and demonstration of pro-activity, diligence and alertness, with the willingness to participate in appropriate training schemes.
