At Cavendish Nuclear we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Radiation Shielding Consultant at one of our key sites: Warrington (Cheshire), Leicester (Leicestershire), Newbury (Berkshire), or Bristol.
The role involves influencing the design and performance of cutting‑edge facilities, mentoring the next generation of specialists, and shaping best practice across the shielding discipline. It’s work that makes a genuine difference, contributing to energy security, national protection and the future of safe nuclear operations. Day-to-day, you’ll play a key role in developing, verifying and delivering high‑quality shielding strategies for some of the UK’s most nationally significant nuclear and defence programmes. This is an opportunity to apply deep technical expertise to complex engineering challenges that keep people, infrastructure and the environment safe.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare high‑quality shielding reports, calculations and technical documentation.
- Verify complex technical outputs produced by other specialists.
- Mentor and support junior shielding engineers, helping develop capability across the discipline.
- Collaborate within multi‑disciplinary teams to identify challenges and deliver consistent, best‑practice shielding solutions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by shaping shielding processes, methodologies and standards.
This role is full time, 37 hours per week, adaptable and can be delivered from various locations, and provides hybrid working arrangements with two days in the office per week at one of our key sites: Warrington (Cheshire), Leicester (Leicestershire), Newbury (Berkshire), or Bristol.
Essential Experience:
- Significant experience in radiation shielding, including radiation transport codes and shielding methodology.
- Proven track record delivering shielding solutions on complex engineering or nuclear projects.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, guiding teams and supporting technical development.
- Strong collaboration skills working across engineering, scientific or project-led disciplines.
- Experience of developing shielding strategies from concept through to implementation.
Qualifications:
- Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
- Additional technical qualifications in nuclear engineering, radiation protection or related specialisms – Desirable.
- Chartered status or working towards it – Desirable.
Security Clearance:
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
