Caudwell Marine (CM) is a start‑up business backed by the billionaire and philanthropist John Caudwell and is developing an innovative, patented outboard motor for launch into key markets and sectors. The CM organisation is a small, experienced team of people who are passionate about successfully bringing this technologically leading outboard motor to market. Each team member has a ‘hands on’ approach and supports each other for the benefit of the programme. Quality is a pivotal role within the organization, responsible for ensuring that every outboard motor manufactured meets the highest standards of performance, reliability, and safety.

The Metrology Technician plays a pivotal part in both proactive and reactive quality – ensuring that part maturity is understood and aligns with expectations & specifications at all phases of development and series production. This role supports the engineering and quality teams by maintaining calibration standards for all internal measurement systems, performing dimensional inspections, and ensuring that all products meet defined specifications.

Responsibilities:
  • Conducting dimensional inspections of an array of components using industry standard measurement equipment to confirm adherence to specifications, standards and customer requirements.
  • Output of detailed measurement and inspection reports to support peers and cross functional teams in understanding pedigree of components & assemblies.
  • Technical support and advice on measurement methods/techniques to cross functional teams, including supporting detailed problem‑solving investigations to assist understanding potential issues.
  • Calibration and maintenance of precision measuring instruments, including gauges, micrometres, and Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), in line with ISO standards and customer requirements.
  • Maintenance of accurate calibration records and inspection reports to support quality management systems (ISO 9001).
  • Support to internal verification processes such as Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) and Statistical Process Controls (SPC) where a requirement.
  • Support to external customer/internal audits to showcase conformity to calibration standards & procedures throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Ownership of metrology workflows, standards and internal processes to support transparent KPI monitoring & tracking.
  • Setup and ongoing development of a dedicated metrology room to support quality and business requirements.
Previous Experience:
  • Proven experience in metrology or complex dimensional inspection within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
  • Preferable - At least 5 years in a ‘blue chip’ manufacturing / engineering organisation where ‘automotive/aerospace level’ quality, procurement and supply chain processes have been demonstrated.
  • Awareness of quality management systems like ISO9001 and their importance within an engineering environment.
  • Experience in creating processes and procedures to support defined KPIs associated with metrology topics.
  • Ideally has also worked in a Small, Medium Enterprise (SME) and is able to demonstrate the ability to ‘roll their sleeves up’ and personally get things done as part of a cross functional team.

  • Technical skills and ability to understand specifications, documents and manuals without support or supervision.
  • Strong understanding of measurement principles, calibration processes, and GD&T.
  • Ability to use CMMs and other precision measuring equipment such as vernier, micrometre, gauges etc.
  • Experience with programming including CCM programming – writing standardised measurement & inspection programs from scratch.
  • Proficient using Microsoft office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc), 3D/CAD software and associated metrology systems/software.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills – ability to simplify detail and provide clear feedback to all levels.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering specifications and drawings without support from engineers.
  • Ability to independently utilise 3D CAD to locate specifications, fitment conditions & part details to support activities.

Qualifications:
  • Relevant engineering or quality‑related qualification preferred (e.g. NVQ, HNC, Engineering Degree or equivalent).
  • Relevant formal metrology training in systems, equipment and software desirable.
Other:
  • Primary location of Coventry, UK with the requirement to work with colleagues at our R&D facility in Lowestoft, UK and suppliers as necessary.
  • Primary hours are 8am to 4pm however candidate needs to be flexible and be able and willing to work outside normal hours when necessary.
  • 5‑days a week onsite presence required at CM production location to support manufacturing & engineering teams.
