A paid internship is available from July to December 2026 (26 weeks) to work with Galloway Fisheries Trust supporting various work programmes.

Galloway Fisheries Trust is a conservation charity working on fish populations, their habitats and water quality across the freshwaters of Galloway. The successful applicant will be involved in delivering various environmental work, working closely with GFT Biologists.

Key items of work that the intern will assist with delivering:

  • Riverwoods development work to expand riparian woodlands (A Riverwoods Blueprint Project)
  • Organising and running public engagement events
  • Eel trapping, monitoring and relocation work on the lower Dee
  • Undertaking various environmental surveys including fish, invertebrate and habitat monitoring
  • Habitat restoration including a river realignment project on the Luce
  • A new salmon fish counter project
  • Understanding impacts of renewable energy schemes on aquatic ecology
  • Surveying and controlling invasive non-native plant species
  • Understanding impacts of climate change on habitats and how to increase resilience in ecological systems
  • Education work

The candidate must be fit, motivated, hardworking and willing to work outdoors during all weather conditions. There may be a requirement to undertake some lone working from time to time. A full valid driving licence is required. The position will be based at Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway.

This full time, fixed term intern post is a wonderful opportunity for a recent graduate with a conservation or environmental degree. It is a funding condition that the intern must be a young person aged up to and including 25 years old. Salary will be £470.75 a week.
