  • Working pattern: Two-week rolling rota
  • Week 1: Sunday 10:15am–5:00pm
  • Week 2: Saturday 10:15am–5:00pm

Additional hours may be available to cover annual leave, events and operational requirements.

About the Role

We are looking for a friendly and welcoming Visitor Experience Assistant to join our team on a permanent weekend contract.

Based within our galleries and visitor spaces, you will play an important role in ensuring every visitor receives a warm welcome and enjoys an engaging and memorable experience at Compton Verney.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, has a passion for customer service and is interested in art, culture and heritage.

  • Role Accountabilities
  • Expected to work the contracted weekend pattern and contribute positively to weekend visitor operations.
  • Based in our galleries, ensure every visitor is made to feel welcome, valued, informed and appreciated.
  • Engage willingly with all visitors to create an inclusive gallery experience.
  • Receive feedback and take appropriate action, referring to the Duty Manager or Visitor Experience Manager when necessary.
  • Adhere to health, safety and welfare policies and procedures, taking reasonable care of own and others' health and safety and complying with relevant instructions, policies, procedures and training.
  • Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, and all employees are required to safeguard the health and wellbeing of children and at-risk adults.

Familiarisation with, and adherence to, the Safeguarding Policy and any associated guidance is an essential requirement.

  • Provide a visible and recognisable presence in the galleries for the protection of artwork.
  • Be aware of the organisational presentation standards and be responsible for the presentation of the gallery, park and public spaces.
  • Ensure accurate completion of all required documentation and records.
  • Assist with internal out of hours activities such as private views and fundraising events.
  • Acquire and maintain a good knowledge of Compton Verney, its collections, exhibitions and activities.
  • Attend training courses, workshops, team meetings and one-to-one training sessions as required to maintain Compton Verney standards.
  • Day to day
  • Help guide visitors around the site providing them with information about the exhibitions, collections, events, park and history of Compton Verney.
  • Check that all equipment in the gallery and public spaces are functioning correctly, reporting any problems through the appropriate channels.
  • Take opportunities to promote exhibitions, events, membership, donations and other aspects of Compton Verney's visitor offer.
  • Encourage donations and promotion of charitable objectives.
  • Work with colleagues to provide an accessible experience for visitors.
  • Be vigilant concerning behaviour that might endanger the works of art, personal safety or private property and refer incidents or concerns to other members of staff as necessary.
  • Enforce site rules in a friendly and polite manner.

The postholder may be required to undertake other duties which may be reasonably requested, and which are compatible with the overall scope and authority of the role.

Experience, Skills and Attributes Needed

  • Experience of delivering excellent customer service in a visitor-facing environment.
  • Previous experience of working in a museum or gallery (desirable).
  • An enthusiasm for learning about Compton Verney, its collections and visitor offer.
  • Strong listening skills and a clear communicator.
  • Personable, welcoming and empathetic.
  • Effective team worker.
  • Ability to remain focused and self-reliant during both busy and quiet times.
  • Awareness of the importance of security and the protection of collections.
  • Proactive attitude and a willingness to contribute within a busy team.
