The Director of Professional Development leads the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive, agency-wide learning and development strategy. This role strengthens organizational capability by ensuring high-quality orientation, training, leadership development, and continuous professional growth opportunities for all employees.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Provides leadership, administrative oversight, and performance management to 2-4 direct reports.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide strategic direction for the Professional Development department to ensure alignment with agency goals, priorities, and best practices.
- Lead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, coaching, and performance evaluation for department staff.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performing, service-oriented team environment through effective communication, regular team meetings, and clear expectations.
- Assess organizational and program-level training needs and develop learning solutions that support employee growth and mission-aligned performance.
- Design, deliver, and evaluate core curriculum, specialized trainings, management and leadership development programs, and team-building activities.
- Ensure training curricula—both instructor-led and online—are current, high-quality, engaging, and aligned with best practices in adult learning.
- Recruit, train, and support qualified course instructors and subject-matter experts.
- Partner with HR colleagues and internal stakeholders to identify learning needs, training gaps, and opportunities for workforce development.
- Consult with program leaders to ensure training offerings support program goals and operational effectiveness.
- Lead continuous quality improvement efforts to assess training effectiveness and drive enhancements.
- Collect, analyze, and report learning-related data; prepare and submit all required internal and external reports accurately and on time.
- Ensure effective operation, maintenance, and utilization of the Learning Management System (LMS).
- Oversee and execute user support processes and ensure accurate tracking of training compliance across the agency.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute assigned agency initiatives such as employee satisfaction surveys, technology rollouts, and strategic plan projects.
- Develop and manage the department budget to ensure efficient and responsible use of financial resources.
- Monitor expenditures and resource allocation in alignment with agency priorities.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support departmental and agency goals.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in learning and development, curriculum design, or human capital development—preferably within social services or behavioral health.
- At least three (3) years of management experience, including hiring, training, and supervising staff.
- Experience with Relias and Paylocity learning management systems is strongly preferred.
SKILLS and COMPETENCIES
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent project management, organizational, interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to design and deliver engaging instructor-led and online training.
