Are you a solid 2nd or early 3rd Line Engineer with strong Windows Server experience who wants to move further into infrastructure and project work? We're working with a long-established, award-winning software and hosting provider based in South Manchester who are looking to add an Infrastructure Support Engineer to their close-knit platform team. This is a hands-on role supporting live environments, but with genuine opportunity to get involved in infrastructure projects, upgrades and ongoing platform improvements.
The Role:
This position sits between support and infrastructure delivery. There's no split between "support" and "projects" - if an issue comes in, the whole team gets involved, and equally you'll be encouraged to contribute to project work as part of your day-to-day role. The environment is predominantly Windows-based, with Linux used for management and supporting services. Linux experience is useful but not essential.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Providing 2nd/3rd line support for a production hosting and infrastructure environment
- Working hands-on with Windows Server (configuration, troubleshooting, changes - not desktop support)
- Supporting virtualised platforms and associated infrastructure services
- Assisting with infrastructure projects including upgrades, migrations and new deployments
- Monitoring systems and responding to alerts within agreed SLAs
- Working with datacentre and third-party partners for connectivity and VPN change requests
- Managing and supporting storage technologies
- Supporting Firewall rule changes and security policies
- Assisting with patching, backups, DR testing and general platform stability
What We're Looking For:
- Experience in a 2nd or 3rd Line Infrastructure/Systems/Hosting Support role
- Strong Windows Server experience and confidence working in server environments
- Some exposure to Linux (nice to have, not mandatory)
- Experience with virtualisation (VMware or similar)
- Understanding of storage platforms and technologies
- Working knowledge of networking fundamentals: IP-level routing, VLAN concepts, Firewall policies, VPN changes (requests and coordination rather than full design)
- A collaborative mindset - happy to support BAU issues and get involved in project delivery
- Someone curious, hands-on and keen to continue developing their infrastructure skills
Why Join?
- South Manchester location with excellent transport links
- Hybrid working - typically 1 day per week onsite
- Supportive, low-churn environment with a strong team culture
- Real exposure to infrastructure projects and platform improvements
- Excellent benefits package including private medical and bonus
- Salary £35,000 - £40,000, depending on experience
If you're a capable infrastructure Support Engineer looking to take the next step without being thrown in at the deep end, this is a great opportunity to grow in a stable, well-run environment. Call for a confidential chat.
