Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Salary/Grade: £45,000 – £50,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Location: Larne
Benefits:

The opportunity
To support a growing business, Caterpillar are recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. In this role, you will have the opportunity to engage directly with high profile global customers and take a lead role in developing complex designs for power generation systems tailored to meet specific customer needs.
As the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will have sufficient experience to take responsibility for most mechanical design activities and delegate work to other designers, when appropriate. This involves developing complex designs for which no precedents may exist. Working as part of a team of engineers, the senior mechanical engineer is expected to complete most projects without supervision.
What you will do:
- Review new projects with respect to commercial and design implications.
- Provide valid designs for projects within defined timeframes and budgets, backed up by technical drawings, instructions and B.O.M.’s to support manufacture, assembly, test and installation.
- Check and approve design calculations, drawings and design documentation, created by design group members.
- Specification and requisition of specialist materials, components and instrumentation.
- Provision of technical support to production teams during manufacture, assembly and test.
- Complete and maintain necessary design documentation.
- Possess an in-depth knowledge of key suppliers and the materials they provide to Caterpillar NI Ltd.
- Develop Standard Work and Administration Instructions where and when appropriate.
- Provide costing information and technical submittal documentation to support sales teams.
- Participate in the training and career development of new designers.
- Assist with product testing and/or evaluation when appropriate.
- Provide guidance and technical leadership to engineers and associate engineers.
What you have:
Product Design and Development – Level Extensive Experience:
- Applies knowledge of acoustics, vibration, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, welding, structures and material science in the design of mechanical systems and structures.
- Develops organizational standards and processes in order to maximize complex product services’ efficiency and effectiveness.
- Creates and introduces new techniques that expedite or simplify the development process.
- Supervises the management of multiple and diverse types of products or services.
- Develops proof-of-concept exercises to prove or disprove validity of proposed products.
- Advises on the appropriate solutions to complex product design and development problems.
- Designs working prototypes of a variety of proposed products or services.
Computer-Aided Design & Engineering – Level Extensive Experience:
- Modelling and creation of engineering documentation using AutoCad and CREO II drawing packages or similar.
- Presents complex products and systems graphically.
- Consults on benefits and drawbacks of top-down design vs. bottom-up design.
Managing Multiple Priorities – Level Extensive Experience:
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
- Works with or leads others to re-prioritize work and reschedule commitments as necessary.
- Responds to shifting priorities while maintaining progress of regularly scheduled work.
Technical Excellence – Level Extensive Experience:
- Ability to develop and provide solutions to significant mechanical engineering technical challenges.
- Engages appropriate subject matter resources to effectively resolve technical issues.
- Mentors others to enhance their technical competence and its application to achieve more effective technical solutions.
- Provides effective solutions to moderate technical challenges through strong technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.
- Assumes accountability for personal technical performance and holds others responsible for theirs.
Education:
- A University Degree in an engineering discipline and/or relevant job experience in a senior technical supervisory role.
Additional information:
- Up to 15% travel requirement.
- This position is currently a hybrid in-office work model, requiring a 3-day weekly office presence onsite at our Larne office and remote work for the remaining days. However, work arrangements may be adjusted at any time based on business needs.
