Job Title: Senior Design Engineer
Salary/Grade: £52,380 – £65,000 Depending on experience
Location: Peterborough

Job Summary
We are currently seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join the Component Engineering Base Engine Team as we approach a period of significant investment in new design to meet our ever changing energy landscape. This role will be focused on design solutions to address challenging requirements, from projects within New Product Introduction, New Technology or updates to existing platforms for a variety of Caterpillar and 3rd Party applications. The successful candidate will serve as an experienced contributor on assignments that are complex in nature, working with individuals and teams across global Manufacturing sites, suppliers and customers.

What You Will Do
As a Senior Design Engineer in the team, you will be expected to strong relevant design experience, knowledge of IC engines and be able to lead, plan and execute challenging tasks and projects. Tasks will include:
Design and packaging of a variety of core engine components which include:
– Major aluminium and cast iron castings, geartrain, valvetrain, drivetrain and in-cylinder components. Components related to breather, cooling & lubrication systems, FEAD systems
Working in a multi-disciplined global team to ensure solutions meet customer, durability and functional requirements
Determining root cause and developing solutions for complex issues arising from the Quality and Manufacturing environments
Developing strong relationships with suppliers where travel is encouraged to ensure design solutions are aligned to high quality and cost expectations
Planning and managing project and sub-project deliverables, ability to lead
Spend up to 20% of your time coaching less experienced Engineers in technical aspects or support on task delivery
Conducting risk assessment through effective FMEA generation on components and systems to identify and address design risks and determine validation needs.
Conduct or generate reports to support component and system design reviews
Maintain communication to peers, team leader and stakeholders with progress against planned activities
Development of drawings to Caterpillar standards and other technical data to support the release of parts for prototype and volume production.
Work with suppliers using APQP methodology and tools

Minimum of 6 years design experience in CAD
Strong technical background (HNC or technical degree preferred in mechanical or automotive engineering) though other qualifications or experience are equally valued
Design knowledge of engine & mechanical components and systems
Modelling & Detailing experience in CREO4
Knowledge and usage of Team Centre – or similar data management software
Experience of running and participating in FMEA
Experience in component and engine validation & verification
Experience gained in the off-highway diesel or machine sector
Experience with alternative fuels and spark ignited engines
Familiarity with the APQP methodology
Advises others on the assessment and provision of all technical solutions
Engages appropriate subject matter resources to effectively resolve technical issues.
Mentors others to enhance their technical competence and its application to achieve more effective technical solutions.
Coaches others in promoting, defining, analyzing, and providing superior technical solutions to business problems.
Provides effective solutions to moderate technical challenges through strong technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.

Product Design – MFG: Knowledge of processes, approaches, tools and techniques of product design; ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design.

Good understanding of Component Manufacturing principles & processes
Develops improvement plans for senior management and evaluates the outcome of the design against the functionality.
Advises others on the development of multiple products and their functionality.
Trains others on advanced tools and approaches of product design.
Monitors the processes and procedures of a complex product design to ensure functional requirements are met.
Evaluates feedback from customers and consults on functional weaknesses.
Controls design and development costs of a proposed product through effective resource coordination.
Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
Level: Extensive Experience:
Develops organizational standards and processes in order to maximize complex product services\’ efficiency and effectiveness.
Creates and introduces new techniques that expedite or simplify the development process.
Supervises the management of multiple and diverse types of products or services.
Develops proof-of-concept exercises to prove or disprove validity of proposed products.
Advises on the appropriate solutions to complex product design and development problems.
Designs working prototypes of a variety of proposed products or services.
