Battery Systems Engineering – 12 Month Industrial Electrification Placement Scheme

We currently have some exciting opportunities for industrial placement students to join Caterpillar. We are looking for talented, ambitious people from various backgrounds who are interested in setting out on the road to success and in return we will provide you the training, mentoring, and support you need to have a successful placement year.
*Please note that in order to be eligible to complete a 12 Month Industrial Placement commencing July 2026, you must be in your penultimate year of study unless enrolled in an integrated master’s program.

Caterpillar’s Electrification & Energy Solutions (E+ES) Division will focus on delivering advanced electrified power train, zero-emissions products/technologies, and the solutions and services associated with these technologies. What experiences can we offer you?
Our industrial placement training scheme consists of two six-month different engineering rotations. You will be a valued and active team member within busy development programs that influence Caterpillar’s Global products which in turn improve the lives of people around the world.
Job duties and responsibilities
- Design – High voltage system design, validation, and testing for mechanical and electrical systems
- Simulation – Battery cell and system modelling for performance and life
- Controls – Battery Management System (BMS) algorithm development, calibration, and validation
- Performance – Battery, system and machine level performance development, validation, compliance, and requirements sign-off
This scheme aims to compliment your academic learning by experiencing how engineering principles are applied in varied real-world engine development applications.
We offer you the opportunity to further grow your communication and teamwork skills, along with improving knowledge through daily collaboration with a variety of team members to deliver your team’s goals. Typical team members would include:
- Graduates, Technicians, Engineers, globally recognised Technical Specialists and people in Caterpillar facilities worldwide.
This scheme should help you to make informed future career decisions, through exposure to different roles and the subsequent multitude of collaboration teams and business partners. This experience will develop understanding of your own strengths and how those can positively contribute to a variety of roles, teams, and work styles. This knowledge should influence future decisions to help you flourish within a career in engineering beyond graduation.
We also operate a conditional offer process; our highest performing placement students are fast tracked to our graduate development scheme. This includes a financial incentive and the potential of a summer work placement. Offers will be made based on the condition that a graduate role is available at the time of your graduation and that you achieve a min of 2:2.
In addition, we offer you a mentor to support your professional development and help you achieve Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with your chosen institution. Our professional development scheme is accredited and highly regarded by the IMechE and the IET.
Who are we looking for?
As the type of roles within our business have become more diverse, we are looking for people who are open minded, excellent problem solvers and have an ability to learn quickly. Prior electrification knowledge is not required. We recognise the value that other STEM based qualifications bring to our team.
Applicants should have achieved or be on track to achieve a minimum of a 2:2 and be studying for a degree in one of the following disciplines:
· Engineering (Aeronautical, Aerospace, Agricultural, Automotive, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronics)
· Materials
· Maths
· Physical Science (Chemistry & Physics)
Recruitment Process
Here is a brief overview of what you can expect when applying to our Placement Student roles…
Online Application: The first stage of the process is to complete the online application and attach your CV, this must be done before the closing date of the role that you\’re applying for. Once we reach the close date, we will begin reviewing all our applications, this may take a little while and we will contact you as soon as possible to let you know if you have been successful in moving forward to the next stage.
Stage one – Video Interview: If selected, you will be invited to attend a pre-recorded user-friendly video interview which you have one week to complete and submit. You are able to record your answers several times to allow you plenty of practice if required. Please ensure that you check your spam emails for this invite. At this stage if you are successful, you will be invited to attend an Assessment Centre onsite on 5th December 2025.
Stage two – Assessment Centre: The Assessment Centre day will look at a range of behaviours such as teamwork, decision-making, communication, and problem-solving. We aim to make these days fun, inclusive and as relaxed as possible.
Stage three – Offer: After the Assessment Centre, the Caterpillar team will review the feedback and extend offers to our preferred candidates, we aim to do this as quickly as possible. Placement Students will start on 6th July 2026. We look forward to receiving your application to join Caterpillar!
