Salary: £66,079 - 82,599 dependant on experience

Location: Peterborough On-Site 5 Days per week

About E+ES: Caterpillar’s Electrification & Energy Solutions (E+ES) Division focuses on delivering advanced electrified powertrain, zero‑emissions products, technologies and associated services. Focus areas include batteries, fuel cells, motors, inverters, micro‑grid controllers, charging, energy storage systems, lifecycle solutions/services and integration of components for ePowertrain solutions across industries.

The Opportunity: As a Data Scientist, you will be an integral part of our dedicated analytics team, supporting the development of data‑driven insights and tools that help Caterpillar and its customers navigate the energy transition. You will work with stakeholders including Business Development, Marketing and Engineering teams to analyse machine and operational data and contribute to customer‑focused analytics solutions. This role provides an opportunity to apply data science skills to real‑world challenges such as machine electrification, total cost of ownership (TCO) and operational optimisation. You will support the development of analytical models and tools that inform business decisions and enhance customer understanding. You will also benefit from exposure to Caterpillar’s global centres of excellence, collaborating with teams in DevOps, cloud platforms, containerisation and emerging technologies including generative AI. This role offers strong development opportunities, enabling you to build technical expertise and a broader understanding of how data science is applied across the organisation.

What will you do:

  • Direct the data gathering, mining and processing processes in large volumes and create appropriate data models.
  • Explore, promote and implement semantic data capabilities through natural language processing, text analysis and machine learning techniques.
  • Define requirements and scope of data analyses, present and report business insights to management using data visualisation technologies.
  • Conduct research on data model optimisation and algorithms to improve effectiveness and accuracy of data analyses.

  • Skills:
    • Business Statistics: knowledge of statistical tools, processes and practices to describe business results in measurable scales and assist in decision making.
    • Accuracy and Attention to Detail: understand the necessity and value of accuracy; complete tasks with high precision.
    • Analytical Thinking: knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; determine root causes of organisational problems and create alternative solutions.
    • Machine Learning: knowledge of principles, technologies and algorithms of machine learning; develop, implement and deliver related systems, products and services.
    • Programming Languages: knowledge of basic concepts and capabilities of programming; use tools, techniques and platforms to write and modify code.
    • Query and Database Access Tools: knowledge of data management systems; support and access facilities for searching, extracting and formatting data for further use.
    • Requirements Analysis: knowledge of tools, methods and techniques of requirement analysis; elicit, analyse and record required business functionality and non‑functionality requirements to ensure successful system or software development projects.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Experience in a Data Scientist or similar analytical role (or strong relevant academic experience).
    • Good foundation in statistical analysis and data science techniques.
    • Proficiency in Python and common data science libraries (NumPy, Pandas).
    • Experience with structured datasets; exposure to time‑series or operational data is beneficial.
    • Basic understanding of APIs or experience working with multiple data sources.
    • Experience with cloud‑based data platforms or analytics environments (e.g. AWS, Snowflake) is desirable.
    • Strong problem‑solving skills and willingness to learn.
    • Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Top candidates will also have:
    • Experience working in a team environment with cross‑functional stakeholders.
    • Interest in machine analytics, electrification or energy systems.
    • Experience creating data visualisations or dashboards.
    • Familiarity with tools such as Jupyter Notebooks or similar environments.
    • A proactive mindset and eagerness to develop new skills.
