We have a unique opportunity for a current year 1 Mechatronics apprentice to join our team located at our Peterborough facility to continue their apprenticeship with Caterpillar.
Central Rotational Program
During this apprenticeship you will rotate between departments, including:
- Maintenance: Our maintenance team members are critical to our business’ success as they possess the technical skills and know‑how to maintain our production equipment and facilities. Maintenance apprentices will use computerized systems to aid the completion of routine maintenance, diagnose equipment faults and carry out repairs in a timely manner.
- Quality: Our Peterborough Quality Team completes customer engine return investigation; we also support validation work for New Product Introduction (NPI) as well as cover any rejects from the assembly test and finish facility. We have departments for metrology, torque analysis and engine testing that are constantly evolving to support the needs of internal and external customers.
- Research & Development: Our Peterborough facility is home to the Caterpillar Europe Research & Development Centre, a state‑of‑the‑art facility that positions technical specialists where they are needed most to identify, build and perfect the technologies and solutions to help our customers be successful. Apprentices will build, rig, and test new technologies that have yet to be mass‑produced.

In collaboration with our partnered training provider, College of West Anglia (Wisbech Campus), our 4‑year advanced apprenticeship scheme will enable you to grow and develop your capabilities alongside on‑the‑job training supported by relatable mentors. Apprentices will spend at least 20% of their working hours completing college‑based learning leading to nationally recognised qualifications through Mechatronics maintenance technician / Skills England the apprenticeship standard.

The Experience
- Mechanical & electrical maintenance of plant machinery.
- Robotic & automation understanding.
- Exposure to CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines.
- Exposure to the assembly, test, and finish of our engines.
- Engine build & rigging activities.
- Engine & transmission testing.
- In field machine test & maintenance.
- Exposure to Electric vehicle & battery testing.
- Working on the layout of rework areas.
- Understanding of reworking process to support customer demands.
- Exposure to stand‑alone test functionality.
Entry Requirements
- GCSEs: Five GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above including Maths, English and a Science or Engineering subject.
- Must be currently in Year One of a Mechatronics Apprenticeship.
- Or completed one year full‑time further education and achieved Performing Engineering Operations, Level 2 (6 units). With Maths and English at level 2.
Post Apprenticeship
On successful completion of this apprenticeship, you are very likely to be offered a position within our world‑class team with plenty of opportunity for long‑term progression. Many of our former apprentices now occupy senior management roles within our organisation as career development is the foundation to all our apprenticeship schemes.
