Caterpillar's Desford Paint Facility is seeking a skilled and proactive Maintenance Technician to support our manufacturing operations through dedicated weekend maintenance coverage (Fri, Sat, Sun).
This role was created to increase planned preventative maintenance activities, improve equipment reliability, and minimise unplanned downtime across our paint and production facilities.
Working as part of the maintenance team, you will play a key role in ensuring that critical plant and equipment are maintained to the highest standards, allowing production operations to perform safely, efficiently, and reliably.
Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities on paint facility equipment, machinery, and associated infrastructure.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing equipment reliability and reducing downtime.
- Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults where appropriate.
- Complete maintenance inspections and asset condition assessments.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are accurately documented within the site's maintenance management system.
- Support statutory inspections and compliance‑related maintenance activities.
- Work closely with production, engineering, and reliability teams to identify improvement opportunities.
- Maintain excellent housekeeping standards and always promote a culture of safety.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with Caterpillar health, safety, and environmental standards. Undertake training/further learning as required.
Qualifications
Candidates should have the following skills and experience
- Time‑served Maintenance Technician/Engineer or recognised engineering apprenticeship.
- Qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, or Multi‑Skilled Engineering (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
- Experience working within a manufacturing, automotive, industrial, or process environment.
- Strong fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively during weekend shifts.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Strong commitment to health and safety.
- Desired Qualifications
- Experience in using PLC based systems.
- Experience in LEV.
- Experience in DSEAR/Compex.
- Apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 in engineering or equivalent.
- Experience within paint shop, surface treatment, or automated manufacturing environments.
- Familiarity with CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management Systems).
- Understanding of PLC‑controlled equipment and automated systems.
- IOSH Working Safely or equivalent safety qualification.
- Experience supporting TPM or reliability‑centred maintenance programmes.

Salary: Starting salary of £37,900 rising to £42,000 once fully competent + shift allowance where applicable.
