Structures Manager – Highways & Infrastructure

Location: Bristol Area – Hybrid, 3 days per week in the office
Rate: Up to £60 per hour
Contract: Initial 6 months
Hours: Full-time

Carrington West is supporting a major organisation with the appointment of an experienced Structures Manager to lead the management, maintenance and strategic development of a diverse highway structures and infrastructure asset portfolio.

This is a senior contract position with responsibility for bridges, retaining walls, culverts, road restraint systems and geotechnical assets, combining technical leadership with strategic asset management and significant capital programme responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of senior engineers, engineers and technicians.
  • Manage inspection, maintenance and improvement programmes across highway and open space structures.
  • Provide expert technical advice on complex infrastructure, highways and development projects.
  • Lead strategic structures asset management and lifecycle planning.
  • Ensure structures assets comply with relevant national standards, codes of practice and health & safety requirements.
  • Develop and deliver capital and revenue programmes, with responsibility for structures capital budgets of up to £3m per annum.
  • Contribute to wider infrastructure investment programmes valued at over £150m.
  • Manage contractors, consultants and external stakeholders across routine and complex projects.
  • Act as Technical Approval Authority for structures-related approvals.
  • Provide technical leadership across structural and geotechnical assets.

About You

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status through ICE or IStruct E.
  • Strong leadership and people management experience.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of highway structures, bridge inspections, structural maintenance and asset management.
  • Experience managing significant capital and revenue budgets.
  • Strong commercial awareness and project/programme management capability.
  • Experience managing consultants, contractors and multidisciplinary stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant structures standards, technical approvals and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with specialist structural design and assessment software.
  • Familiarity with structures asset management systems such as AMX would be beneficial.

This role would particularly suit an experienced Structures Manager, Highway Structures Manager, Bridges Manager, Principal Structures Engineer or Structures Asset Manager looking for a senior contract with responsibility for both technical delivery and long-term asset strategy.
