Are you an experienced Civil Engineer within the water sector looking to take on greater technical responsibility while continuing to develop your career?
I am currently recruiting on behalf of a major infrastructure organisation delivering a significant programme of water and wastewater projects across the East of England.
This organisation is looking for a Senior Civil Engineer who can provide technical leadership across civil design, support projects throughout design and construction, and help develop engineers within the wider team.
The role would suit someone who enjoys remaining technically involved while taking greater responsibility for design quality, engineering decisions and the development of junior engineers.
The Role
As Senior Civil Engineer, you will take a technical lead across the civil engineering elements of a range of water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
You will work alongside multidisciplinary engineering, project management, construction and supply chain teams, helping ensure designs are technically robust, practical to construct and delivered in line with programme, cost, quality and safety requirements.
- Providing technical leadership across water recycling treatment works and associated infrastructure projects.
- Leading and reviewing civil engineering design activities from initial development through to detailed design and construction.
- Checking and reviewing engineering calculations, drawings, technical documentation and 3D models.
- Ensuring civil designs comply with relevant industry standards, statutory requirements and project specifications.
- Providing technical guidance and support to Civil Engineers and other members of multidisciplinary design teams.
- Reviewing construction site and supply chain queries and providing clear, technically accurate responses.
- Managing engineering and design risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensuring health and safety considerations are embedded throughout the design process in accordance with CDM Regulations.
- Supporting buildability reviews alongside construction teams.
- Working closely with BIM, design, project and construction teams to optimise engineering solutions.
- Supporting the development of off-site manufacture, modular construction and repeatable design solutions.
- Mentoring and coaching junior engineers and supporting their professional development.
- Contributing to technical forums, lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Identifying opportunities to improve design efficiency and project delivery.
- Promoting sustainable and low‑carbon engineering solutions throughout project design.
- What They’re Looking For
- A degree or master’s degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent knowledge gained through relevant industry experience.
- Significant civil design experience within the UK water or wastewater sector.
- Experience working on water treatment, wastewater treatment, water recycling or associated infrastructure projects.
- Previous experience delivering detailed design within a Design & Build environment.
- Strong knowledge of reinforced concrete design, including BS EN 1992.
- Experience designing or reviewing water‑retaining structures.
- Knowledge of ground engineering and geotechnical considerations.
- Experience with buried pipework, drainage and site infrastructure.
- Knowledge of reinforcement detailing.
- Experience with steel and masonry design would be beneficial.
- Experience developing civil layouts, roads, drainage and wider site infrastructure.
- Experience reviewing engineering calculations, drawings and design documentation.
- Experience undertaking or reviewing site surveys.
- Familiarity with 3D and BIM‑based design environments.
- A strong understanding of CDM Regulations and design risk management.
- The confidence to technically review and challenge designs where required.
- Experience coaching or mentoring less experienced engineers.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Chartered Engineer status with ICE or IStruct E, or be working towards professional chartership.
