Principal Clinical Scientist (Band 8a)

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust (CCC) is seeking to appoint a Principal Clinical Scientist to provide physics support to the radiotherapy department. CCC has a large physics department with over 30 clinical scientists involved in the provision of support to either Imaging or Radiotherapy (including low‑energy proton therapy), or in academic research. The department has a close working relationship with the Physics Department at the University of Liverpool with whom we collaborate to provide an MSc course in Clinical Science (Medical Physics) as part of the Health Education England's Scientist Training Programme.

The Radiotherapy Physics group is responsible for the physics support to Clinical Oncology for Radiotherapy and Specialised Services within the Radiation Services Directorate. The postholder will be responsible for assisting the Higher Principal and Consultant Clinical Scientists for Radiotherapy and Specialised Services in providing scientific support as directed.

The postholder will be State Registered as a Clinical Scientist, and accredited (or have a portfolio ready for submission) as a Medical Physics Expert as defined by the ionising radiation (Medical Exposure) regulations with respect to some aspects of Radiotherapy or Specialised Services clinical service lines.

The wide range of equipment and different clinical techniques at CCC provides an ideal opportunity to gain a broad experience in all aspects of radiotherapy including brachytherapy and low energy proton treatments. Flexibility exists for staff to become involved in specialist topics, subject to departmental priorities. Physicists are committed to flexible working practices to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the Radiotherapy Physics team, you will support the provision of quality, safe and effective radiotherapy, ensuring all clinical and non‑clinical requirements are met. You will assist in the management of quality assurance programmes, maintain equipment performance data, deliver education and training to staff and patients, and contribute to the continuous improvement of radiotherapy services.
