This post is an opportunity for a skilled, motivated Radiotherapy Physicist with a particular focus on the development and implementation of specialist technologies and techniques. In this role, you will lead and contribute to a variety of projects in line with departmental priorities, in addition to routine clinical work in Radiotherapy Physics. You must be HCPC registered Clinical Scientist and be working towards timely submission of a RPA2000 MPE portfolio if not already certified.

Responsibilities:

  • Commission, quality control, radiation safety checks and calibration of radiotherapy equipment used in the planning or treatment of patients, following quality assurance procedures.
  • Be responsible for the commissioning of radiotherapy equipment and other items as identified by the Head of Radiotherapy Physics, including implementation of national protocols and decisions on safety‑critical issues.
  • Carry out definitive calibration of treatment machines and detectors, and supervise staff in this activity.
  • Return radiotherapy treatment machines into clinical use after repair, liaising with senior equipment engineers and senior radiographic staff.
  • Perform treatment planning and independently check plans.
  • Resolve issues when checking complex radiotherapy treatment plans.
  • Ensure scientific accuracy of radiation treatment calculations and checks, treatment verification, patient dosimetry and related measurements on behalf of Oncology.
  • Provide scientific advice to medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Take a leading role in developing services within Radiotherapy Physics, supervising healthcare scientists and delegating staff as necessary.
  • Use specialised computer software and hardware, adapt computer systems and develop software solutions to meet the needs of Radiotherapy Physics and Radiotherapy.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of Radiotherapy equipment, dosimetry, and computing systems at Medical Physics Expert (MPE) level or equivalent.
  • Ability to supervise projects and groups of staff.
  • Good negotiation skills with staff and suppliers to optimise Radiotherapy Physics services.

Desirable:

  • MPE training or equivalent.
