At Catch22, we are proud of our reputation as a modern and progressive employer. Our 1,300 colleagues and 300 volunteers work at every stage of the social welfare cycle, supporting over 60,000 individuals from cradle to career. Our work spans education, justice and rehabilitation, children's social care, family support, social action and getting people into work. Catch22 College is the collective name for 9 sites we have across the country delivering academic and vocational training programmes for young people aged 16+ who, for whatever reason, are not suited to a mainstream school setting. Our Peterlee site provides students with a highly supportive environment where they have access to opportunities to build up their confidence and self-belief, and to gain new skills and experiences that will help them to achieve their goals in life. We exist to help our students find their future.

We are looking for a Teaching Assistant to work as part of a small team delivering tailored learning programmes to a small cohort of students. You will be supporting the delivery of Maths and English, vocational programmes as well as enrichment elements to help our students prepare for independence and work experience. We expect every member of the team to work collaboratively and flexibly, but our Teaching Assistant will have specific accountabilities, which include:

  • Supporting our tutor to deliver amazing teaching to our students.
  • Support our Tutor to deliver English and Maths Functional Skills and vocational subjects over four teaching days.
  • Use one day to support the new Recruitment and Progression Officer to plan and deliver employability workshops, support guest speakers and provide enrichment activities.
  • Provide support to learners on a one-to-one basis and in small groups, with empathy, respect and patience, appreciating that our students have faced many challenges in their lives which can make them harder to engage.
  • Contribute to regular student reviews, using this and any other opportunity to build up our students’ self-belief and confidence, and to celebrate their successes or learn from any mistakes they may have made along the way.
  • Where necessary, support the tutor to address any poor behaviour in the classroom (or wider centre) in a way that’s appropriate to the situation and to the learner.
  • Sometimes provide cover for the Tutor when they are absent, and occasionally lead small group work within lessons.

Working alongside the wider team to build a culture of maturity, positivity and aspiration at the College site:

  • Embrace Catch22’s belief in the importance of building strong and meaningful human relationships, built around trust and empathy.
  • Promote a culture of expectation and aspiration at the school – a genuine sense, shared by our students, that they are here to learn, grow and succeed, not just pass the time of day.

Contributing to the overall success of the Catch22 College: Peterlee team:

  • Be flexible and ready to get stuck in! The Catch22 College: Peterlee team is small, but aspires to be the best. For this reason, every member of the team must be committed to working collaboratively and flexibly, sometimes covering each other or going the extra mile to have the best possible impact for our students.
