My client, a leading international electrification business, seeks a Systems Engineer to join their Engineering division based at their South Tyneside operation.

About the Role

Reporting to the Systems & Projects Manager, the Systems Engineer will own the technical or architecture for new product development. You will be tasked with the gathering of requirements, creating design specifications, reviewing design and participation in the verification process.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work with stakeholders to agree a set of customer/product requirements for a product or system.
  • Support Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) process and develop DFMEA for recording potential failure modes and planned corrective actions.
  • Define clear system-level requirements based on stakeholder needs taking into consideration hardware and software limitations and real-world constraints.
  • Breakdown complex engineering problems/requirements into structured system level requirements.
  • Work with the design team to develop and design the system architecture for the product.
  • Ensure the correct product is designed, one that meets but does not exceed stakeholder expectations and needs.
  • Work closely with the design teams (project management, hardware, software and mechanical engineers) to ensure they are clear about the product they are designing and how they ensure compliance of their design to the requirements of that design.
  • Work closely with project management to ensure projects follow an agreed product development cycle that allows traceability and validation of compliance.
  • This traceability must be robust to the scrutiny of stakeholders, customers and external bodies.
  • Work closely with the Validation Engineers during the V-cycle to ensure agreed requirements are testable, not just at the validation stage, but also at the requirements definition stage to ensure they are prepared for and capable of testing and validating the functional and system requirements of the design.

About you

To be considered for the role, it is essential that you possess a degree in a relevant technical discipline (e.g. electronics, mechatronics, robotics, automation etc.) and demonstrable experience in Systems Engineering.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrable understanding of the current trends in systems engineering and product development cycles, especially when applied to electric vehicles, on or off-road.
  • Experience of designing complex system requirements, ideally as it relates to motor/vehicle control, automotive applications, timing techniques, control algorithm design and simulation.
  • A proven record of capturing customer or product requirements, and translating these into clear system level requirements.
  • Demonstrable record of dissemination of system level requirements into a set of functional and technical requirements.
  • Excellent product knowledge within the electric vehicle market and ideally a record of driving product development through a V-cycle development process.
  • Experience of working with verification/validation engineers to ensure requirements are achievable and testable.
  • Experience of using requirements capture tools (ideally Polarion), and ensuring traceability of requirements, test methods and test results.
  • Understanding of power electronics ideally in electric vehicle applications.
  • Some understanding of functional safety standards and requirements (e.g. ISO 26262 or EN ISO 13849-1) is desirable.
  • Some understanding of industrial Cybersecurity standards and process requirements is also desirable.
  • Experience of systems level modelling and simulation and/or systems level testing within an embedded software/firmware-based product development environment is desirable.
  • Awareness of good engineering practice and methodology.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a world-leader in their field who are on an impressive growth plan and at the forefront of technology development in their market sector.
