About Castle Surveys
Castle Surveys is an independent, multidisciplinary geospatial and land surveying company, headquartered in Ashby de la Zouch with offices in Manchester, London, Cheltenham and Scotland. We deliver everything in-house, with no subcontracting, and work to an ISO 9001 aligned management system.
Our work is genuinely varied. On any given week the team might be scanning a listed building, mapping a motorway corridor, surveying a reservoir bed, tracing buried utilities or setting out a data centre floor. That variety is exactly what makes this a brilliant place to build a surveying career.
The role
We're looking for a Geospatial Engineering Surveyor to join our team. You'll be the person on site making sure the data is right: establishing control, carrying out topographic surveys, setting out, then processing it all back in the office and delivering clear, accurate results to our clients.
It's a hands on role with real responsibility. You'll work across construction, infrastructure, highways, utilities, heritage and development projects, sometimes as part of a team and sometimes leading small jobs yourself.
And it doesn't stop there. Once you've got the core skills nailed, we'll train you in our specialist areas, so the role can grow with you.
Key responsibilities
On site
- Carry out topographic land surveys using total stations, GNSS and levels, capturing detail to the client's specification.
- Establish and maintain survey control networks, including traverses, GNSS control and precise levelling, tied to OS National Grid and Ordnance Datum Newlyn.
- Set out for construction and engineering works, from site grids, piles and foundations to roads, drainage and structures.
- Carry out as-built and monitoring surveys, and check work against design.
- Use 3D laser scanners for measured building and structure surveys, [CONFIRM, e.g. Leica RTC360].
- Plan your own site day: kit checks, calibration records, access and permits.
Back in the office
- Process and adjust survey data, including control network adjustments and GNSS post processing.
- Produce accurate 2D and 3D CAD drawings to Castle Surveys and client standards.
- Write clear survey reports and control reports, including accuracy statements and QA records.
- Check your own work and colleagues' work as part of our ISO 9001 aligned QA process.
Health, safety and clients
- Work safely at all times, following RAMS, site rules and our Behavioural Safety Programme, and use your Stop Work Authority when needed.
- Contribute to RAMS for your jobs.
- Be the friendly, professional face of Castle Surveys on site, liaising with clients, site managers and engineers.
- Look after company vehicles and survey equipment.
Where the role can take you
The core surveying skills are the foundation. Once you're confident with them, you can move into one or more of our specialist areas, with training provided.
Mobile mapping
Capturing highways, rail and urban corridors at road speed with vehicle mounted LiDAR and 360Β° imagery, then processing and extracting design ready data.
Drone (UAV) surveys
Planning and flying photogrammetry and LiDAR missions over sites, quarries, roofs and infrastructure
CAA flyer ID, GVC, and flight training under our Operations Manual
Hydrographic surveys
Bathymetric surveys of reservoirs, rivers, canals and harbours from our survey boats, including multibeam and single beam work
HP SitePrint robotic layout
Printing building layouts directly onto slabs and floors for contractors, including data centre and commercial fit out projects
What you'll need
Essential
- At least [INSERT, e.g. 2] years' experience as a land, engineering or geospatial surveyor.
- Confident with total stations, GNSS and levels on site.
- Solid understanding of survey control, coordinate systems and survey accuracy.
- Experience of setting out on construction or engineering sites.
- Good working knowledge of CAD, ideally AutoCAD or Civil 3D, and survey processing software such as [INSERT, e.g. Leica Infinity, n4ce or LSS].
- Clear, accurate written reports.
- CSCS card, or willingness to get one.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel and stay away when a job needs it.
- A careful, safety first attitude and pride in getting things right.
Desirable
- A degree, HNC or HND in geomatics, surveying, civil engineering or similar.
- Working towards, or holding, RICS or CICES chartered status.
- Experience with 3D laser scanning and point cloud software, such as Leica Cyclone or Autodesk ReCap.
- Any exposure to mobile mapping, drone surveys, hydrographic work or robotic layout.
- Rail (PTS), highways or utility survey experience.
- First aid or SSSTS qualifications.
What we offer
- A competitive salary, depending on experience.
- 23 days' holiday plus bank holidays.
- Company pool vehicle or allowance, fuel card,
- Pension scheme.
- Clear progression into specialist areas such as mobile mapping, drones, hydrographic surveying and HP SitePrint.
- The latest kit, from Leica instruments and scanners to mobile mapping systems and survey vessels.
- A friendly, owner led company where your work is noticed and your ideas are listened to.
