A large-scale, not-for-profit primary care organisation in the North East is seeking to appoint an Independent Non-Executive Director to its Board. The organisation delivers primary care services at scale across multiple sites, supporting a population of more than 130,000 patients through a fully salaried clinical workforce. It operates with an independent Board and benefits from close strategic alignment with the wider NHS system, combining operational autonomy with strong system integration.
This appointment forms part of a planned strengthening of the Boardβs collective capability as the organisation continues its growth, service development and integration agenda.
The Role
As a Non-Executive Director, you will work collectively with fellow Board members to provide effective governance, strategic oversight and constructive challenge. You will support the Executive team in delivering high-quality, safe and sustainable primary care services, while ensuring strong accountability, risk management and regulatory compliance. You will be expected to bring an independent perspective, balancing support with robust challenge, and to contribute meaningfully to Board decision-making and long-term strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Actively participate in Board and committee meetings, contributing to effective corporate leadership
- Support the development, delivery and oversight of organisational strategy
- Provide constructive challenge and independent judgement on performance, risk and quality
- Ensure robust governance, internal controls and risk management arrangements
- Oversee compliance with relevant legal, regulatory and NHS frameworks
- Act in the best interests of the organisation and its sole shareholder
- Support collaboration and integration across the wider health and social care system
- Uphold public service values, integrity and high ethical standards
Candidate Profile
You will bring:
- Clinical expertise in primary care (medicine)
- Senior leadership experience within healthcare or a comparably complex organisation
- Experience as a G.P. or a Medical Director is essential
- Strong understanding of governance, accountability and Board-level decision-making
- Previous Board, Committee or Non-Executive experience is desirable
- Commercial and political acumen, with the ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments
- Experience of organisational change, service improvement or growth
- Sound financial literacy and understanding of performance and risk
- The confidence to provide independent, impartial and constructive challenge
You will demonstrate high personal integrity, sound judgement and a clear commitment to NHS values, public service and community impact.
