About Castle Environmental

Castle Environmental is a leading specialist in waste treatment, disposal and recycling, handling in excess of 200,000 tonnes of waste each year. With more than 40 years of experience, we provide customers with confidence through our technical expertise, high standards of processing and commitment to compliance.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Technical Assessor to join our Technical Sales team. This is an opportunity for an accomplished waste professional to take on the most challenging technical assessments, provide high-level technical support across the business and play a key role in developing the capability of our wider assessment team.

For the right person, the role also offers the opportunity to develop into a position of greater responsibility as Castle continues to grow.

The role

As Senior Technical Assessor, you will be a key source of technical expertise within Castle. You will take the lead on complex and challenging waste assessments, support colleagues with difficult technical decisions and help ensure our assessment standards remain consistently high.

Alongside your own technical responsibilities, you will help develop the skills and confidence of other assessors, improve working practices and work closely with colleagues across the business to find effective, compliant solutions for our customers.

Key responsibilities

Technical assessment and expertise

  • Lead the technical assessment and classification of complex and challenging waste enquiries, applying an in-depth knowledge of WM3.
  • Provide high-level technical advice and guidance to colleagues on difficult or unusual waste streams and classification challenges.
  • Support consistent, accurate and compliant assessment decisions across the team.
  • Assist the wider project and technical team in the continual improvement of environmental performance
  • Assist with resolving complex technical issues and non-conformances, working with onsite chemists, customers and third-party outlets where required.

Team development and mentoring

  • Act as a technical resource for the wider Technical Assessment team, supporting colleagues with challenging assessments and technical queries.
  • Mentor and develop junior Technical Assessors, helping them build their knowledge, confidence and technical capabilities.
  • Share expertise and promote best practice to improve the overall quality and consistency of assessments.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen team capability, assessment processes and ways of working.

Commercial and operational support

  • Apply your knowledge of the hazardous waste treatment market to support technically sound and commercially competitive assessment decisions.
  • Work with colleagues across Technical Sales, Commercial, Operations and other departments to identify practical treatment and disposal solutions.
  • Support the resolution of non-conformances and help identify suitable alternative outlets where required.
  • Develop relationships with third-party outlets and industry contacts to strengthen our options for managing challenging waste streams and maximising the inputs to our 3 treatment plants.
  • Assist the commercial team during customer Duty of Care audits

Continuous improvement and future development

  • Identify opportunities to improve assessment workflows, systems and processes.
  • Contribute technical expertise to the development of new processes and business opportunities.
  • Engage with relevant external stakeholders, including the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and the Environmental Services Association, on technical and compliance-related matters as appropriate.
  • As your experience within Castle develops, take the opportunity to assume greater responsibility and contribute more widely to the business.

What you'll bring

We are looking for someone with substantial experience in hazardous waste assessment who enjoys tackling complex technical challenges and helping others develop their expertise.

You will combine strong analytical skills and attention to detail with a practical understanding of the hazardous waste industry. You will be confident making sound technical decisions, explaining your reasoning to others and working collaboratively to resolve difficult problems.

  • Extensive experience in the technical assessment and classification of waste using WM3.
  • An in-depth understanding of the hazardous waste industry and its treatment and disposal routes.
  • The ability to assess complex waste streams and resolve challenging technical queries.
  • Excellent analytical skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical matters clearly.
  • The ability and enthusiasm to mentor, support and develop colleagues.
  • Excellent IT skills and an interest in improving systems and processes.
  • A collaborative approach, with the confidence to provide technical guidance across different departments.

Why join Castle Environmental?

  • The opportunity to become a key technical authority within an established specialist waste business.
  • A varied role combining complex technical assessments, problem-solving and team development.
  • The opportunity to share your expertise and make a tangible difference to the performance of the wider team.
  • Scope to contribute to the development of technical processes and the future direction of the business.
  • The potential to progress into a position of greater responsibility as you develop.
  • Opportunity to utilise your technical skills beyond waste assessment by supporting the wider business and representing the organisation at trade body events.

The opportunity to hold a key position in a business that has a proven record of innovation in waste treatment and ambitious plans for the future.

What we offer

  • Competitive basic salary, dependent on experience.
  • The opportunity to earn a performance-related bonus.
  • Company pension.
  • Life insurance.
  • Sick pay.
