Are you an experienced IT Systems Engineer looking for an opportunity to take ownership of complex infrastructure, work with a broad range of technologies and play a key role in delivering IT projects?

Castle Employment is recruiting for an IT Systems Engineer to join an established and successful engineering and manufacturing business based in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, offering a salary of up to Β£48,000 per annum. This is a permanent, full-time position working 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys a combination of hands-on technical support, infrastructure management and project delivery. You'll be joining an established IT function, supporting a varied technical environment across on-premises infrastructure, cloud platforms, networking and security.

The role offers plenty of variety, with the opportunity to get involved in infrastructure improvements, new technology implementations and projects that make a real difference to the wider business.

The Role: As IT Systems Engineer, you'll be responsible for maintaining, supporting and improving the company's IT infrastructure, ensuring systems remain secure, reliable and fit for purpose.

Working closely with the wider IT team and internal stakeholders, you'll provide 3rd line technical support whilst taking an active role in planning and delivering infrastructure projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 3rd line technical support, troubleshooting and resolving complex infrastructure and systems issues.
  • Managing and maintaining Windows and Linux server environments.
  • Administering Microsoft Entra ID, including user access, Conditional Access, MFA and hybrid identity.
  • Supporting and managing Microsoft Azure infrastructure, including virtual machines, networking, storage and backups.
  • Building, deploying and maintaining containerised applications using Docker.
  • Managing and configuring network infrastructure, including firewalls, routers and switches.
  • Supporting VMware virtualisation environments.
  • Implementing system upgrades, security patches and new installations.
  • Planning and delivering IT infrastructure projects, from initial design through to implementation.
  • Monitoring system performance, security and availability.
  • Maintaining technical documentation and sharing knowledge across the IT team.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the business to identify and implement technical improvements.

About You: We're looking for an experienced IT Systems Engineer or Systems Administrator who enjoys solving technical challenges and taking a proactive approach to improving IT infrastructure.

You'll ideally bring:

  • A minimum of three years' experience in an IT Systems Engineer, Systems Administrator or similar infrastructure-focused role.
  • Strong 3rd line technical support experience.
  • Hands-on experience managing Windows and Linux servers.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Azure and Entra ID, including hybrid cloud environments.
  • Practical experience with Docker and containerised workloads.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting Cisco or FortiGate firewalls, routers and switches.
  • Strong understanding of networking, VPNs and IT security.
  • Experience working with VMware virtualisation.
  • The ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and identify effective solutions.
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A proactive, organised approach with the ability to manage competing priorities.

Experience delivering infrastructure projects and improving existing systems would be particularly beneficial.

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
  • Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator Associate (SC-300)
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
  • Cisco CCNA
  • Docker Certified Associate (DCA)
  • Relevant hands-on experience is equally important, so we'd welcome applications from candidates who have developed their technical knowledge through practical experience.

What's on Offer?

  • Salary up to Β£48,000 per annum
  • Permanent, full-time position
  • 39-hour working week
  • Monday to Friday
  • 25 days' annual leave
