Job Description Trainee Toolmaker / Skilled Machinist (Manual or CNC Background)
Location: Pickering
Salary: £17.24 per hour (£34,336) + Overtime
Shift: Rotating Days & Nights (12-hour shifts)
Are you a machinist looking to step into a toolroom environment and build real problem-solving skills? We’re open to people from both manual machining and CNC backgrounds — as long as you understand machining fundamentals and want to develop into toolmaking.
The role:
- 80% tool repair – diagnosing faults and fixing tooling fast
- 20% TPM / preventative maintenance
- Working with manual machines (mills, lathes, grinders)
- Basic TIG welding for repairs (training available)
- Tight turnaround work – often within 24 hours
What we’re looking for:
- Experience in machining (manual or CNC with strong manual fundamentals)
- Understanding of how components are made and repaired
- Ability to think through problems and find solutions
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication across shift handovers
Nice to have:
- Manual machining experience (mills, lathes, grinders)
- Toolroom or repair background
- Basic welding experience
- Crane / FLT licences
The team:
- Established toolroom – most team members have 10+ years’ service
- Supportive but high-performing environment
Shift pattern:
- Week 1: 3 days
- Week 2: 3 nights
- Week 3: 2 days + 2 nights (All 8–8 shifts)
