Interim Hygiene Improvement Lead

Leeds
£400 - £500 per day
Approximately 3-month interim assignment
Predominantly Monday to Friday nights, with flexibility to work days

Are you an experienced hygiene leader from a chilled food manufacturing environment who can quickly assess an operation, identify opportunities for improvement and strengthen the systems behind consistently high hygiene standards?

We are recruiting an Interim Hygiene Improvement Lead for an established food manufacturer in Leeds. This is a hands-on improvement assignment covering two nearby manufacturing sites, with a clear focus on strengthening hygiene systems, standards, routines and team performance.

This is more than an interim cover role. You will have the opportunity to take an objective look at the current hygiene operation, challenge existing practices constructively and implement practical improvements that leave a lasting impact.

What you'll be doing

Working closely with the hygiene team and wider operational leadership, you will:

  • Review current hygiene systems, processes, cleaning routines and documentation across both sites
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen standards and implement practical, sustainable improvements
  • Lead, support and develop Hygiene Supervisors and Operatives, improving consistency and accountability
  • Ensure hygiene standards meet legal, BRC and customer requirements
  • Review routine, periodic and deep-cleaning schedules across equipment and production areas
  • Strengthen hygiene documentation, checklists and reporting to support compliance and audit readiness
  • Ensure hygiene activities are appropriately risk assessed and delivered with a safety-first approach
  • Support third-party and customer audits, ensuring hygiene-related corrective actions are effectively closed out
  • Work with Technical to review hygiene KPIs, analyse performance and recommend improvements
  • Build effective working relationships across Production, Engineering, Technical and Health & Safety
  • Review training and competency requirements to ensure team members are appropriately trained and signed off
  • Support effective management of hygiene labour, equipment and consumables

What you'll need

  • Proven hygiene management or leadership experience within a chilled food manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of hygiene management systems, cleaning standards and manufacturing audit requirements
  • HACCP qualification
  • COSHH training
  • IOSH Managing Safely
  • Demonstrable experience leading and developing hygiene teams
  • The ability to review existing processes, identify gaps and implement improvements
  • Strong attention to detail and confidence working with hygiene documentation and compliance systems
  • The ability to work effectively with operational, technical and engineering stakeholders

A NEBOSH qualification and exposure to major retailer standards would be advantageous.

Working pattern

  • The role will predominantly operate Monday to Friday on nights, giving you the opportunity to see the hygiene operation in full and understand how standards and processes are working in practice.
  • Flexibility to work some daytime hours will also be important, allowing you to engage with the wider leadership and management teams and ensure improvements are embedded across the operation

The opportunity

  • This is an excellent interim opportunity for someone who enjoys getting under the skin of a manufacturing operation and making tangible improvements.
  • You’ll be joining a business investing in its operations and looking to strengthen the systems, processes and standards that support future performance.
  • The assignment is expected to run for approximately three months initially, with a proposed rate of £400 - £500 per day, dependent on experience and engagement arrangements.

If you’re an experienced Hygiene Manager, Head of Hygiene or Hygiene Improvement Lead from a chilled food manufacturing environment and are available for an interim assignment in Leeds, we’d like to hear from you.
