Castle Craig Hospital is one of the UK and Europe’s leading centres for the treatment of addiction and associated mental health conditions. Established in 1988, we provide an abstinence‑based, 12‑Step‑informed treatment programme to up to 82 inpatients, supported by outpatient and teletherapy services across the UK and Europe. We are located in the beautiful Scottish Borders, approximately 45 minutes from Edinburgh and 50 minutes from Glasgow, and offer a unique, supportive environment with strong multidisciplinary teamwork and opportunities for professional development.
The role
We are seeking an experienced Specialty Doctor (Resident Medical Officer) to join our medical team. The post holder plays a key role in delivering high‑quality medical care to inpatients, supporting detoxification programmes, and providing medical leadership and guidance to nursing staff. You will work closely with consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the safe, effective management of patients with substance misuse and co‑existing mental health and physical health needs. The post operates on a rotational shift pattern of 14 days onsite, with company accommodation and meals provided, followed by 14 days off, alternating with another Specialty Doctor.
Key responsibilities
- Clinical
- Undertake medical assessments of new admissions and ongoing reviews of inpatients
- Provide routine medical management of detoxification under consultant supervision, escalating complex cases as required
- Monitor patients’ physical and mental health, managing intercurrent illness and medical emergencies
- Provide resident medical cover and emergency care during duty periods, including on‑call responsibilities
- Contribute to discharge planning, prescriptions and follow‑up arrangements
- Ensure accurate, timely, and professional clinical documentation
- Communication
- Participate in daily ward rounds and effective handover
- Prepare clear discharge summaries and communicate appropriately with GPs and referrers
- Escalate concerns promptly to the Consultant, Medical Director, or senior colleagues

- Practise in accordance with GMC guidance and hospital policies
- Maintain CPD, appraisal, revalidation, and medical indemnity
- Participate in audit, clinical governance, and service development activities
Person specification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Experience working as a Specialty Doctor, RMO, or in a similar role
- Competence in managing routine detoxification and acute medical issues
- Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification
- Strong communication skills and a patient‑centred approach
- Experience in addiction psychiatry, substance misuse, or mental health
- Experience working in inpatient or residential care settings
