Who We Are

At Cast Iron Games, we build technically ambitious games in a calm, focused environment, where every team member has a voice. Based in Tileyard North, we collaborate with high quality partners on high-quality projects, guided by clarity, consistency, and mutual respect. We’re a young and growing studio, but our team is made up of experienced developers who’ve worked across AAA and independent titles. Together, we’re building a supportive, balanced environment where great work happens without crunch.

The Role

As an Experienced Programmer, you'll contribute across multiple areas of a game's development – from game components and runtime tech to tools and performance work. You'll work in complex codebases and be expected to take responsibility for your features, collaborate with other disciplines, and write clear, robust C++ code. This role is ideal for someone who has already contributed to a shipped title and is ready to deepen their autonomy, technical scope, and cross-discipline awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement game components, runtime features, and tools in production environments
  • Take ownership of assigned features from scoping through delivery and support
  • Collaborate with design, art, QA, and production to ensure technical solutions meet creative and schedule goals
  • Debug and optimise existing systems for performance, stability, and memory
  • Work in complex or unfamiliar codebases with care and curiosity
  • Self-review and test your work, raising questions when unsure
  • Participate in code reviews, offering constructive feedback
  • Support team quality through documentation, pairing and knowledge sharing

What We’re Looking For

Core Requirements

  • You must have worked on a shipped or released title, either commercial or as part of a professional team
  • Strong proficiency with C++ in a real-time environment (games or similar)
  • Ability to navigate and work within large or legacy codebases
  • Experienced implementing features independently and integrating with existing systems
  • Familiar with performance and optimisation
  • Comfortable using Perforce or similar source control, and task/bug tracking tools such as Jira

Ways of Working

  • Self-aware and responsible, knows when to ask for help, when to push forward, and when to pause
  • Proactive in spotting issues and suggesting solutions
  • Communicates clearly and respectfully with peers across disciplines
  • Takes feedback well and offers it constructively in return
  • Understands that reliable, maintainable code is as important as speed or cleverness

Bonus Points

  • Experience with graphics programming concepts (materials, shaders, rendering pipelines)
  • Familiarity with graphics APIs (e.g. DirectX12, Vulkan)
  • Built tools or systems that supported cross-discipline workflows
  • Exposure to networking, save systems, or engine-level work
  • Has contributed meaningfully to late-stage optimisation or QA support
